I thought I was going to be "Mr. Flatheads Forever"... I was indoctrinated into the Flathead way of life at a young age, but unfortunately they just don't seem to agree with me. I picked up this 327 for next to nothing, and had planned to put it in my '58 Impala. The Impala is far from driving, so maybe I'll just have to put this backed by a T5 in my '40 Sedan until the Impala is ready?

I was told never to put an orange engine into a Ford... So I'm going to paint it gold before installation.

  2. Welcome to the dark side! I like old Ford’s, but I’ll put a Small Block Chevrolet into anything. Flatheads are cool but way out of my price range. Looks like a cool project.

No matter what color you paint it, it'll still be a SBC, time to pick a color of your choice!

Paint it blue and swear its a Y-block! So long as it has a honk'in-ass snotty idling camshaft It don't make a 'tinkers-damn' what kinda engine it has.

  7. SBC - Twice the power for 1/4 the flathead money. I’ll be watching this one.

Thanks guys! I feel better about it now... I gotta wait till later this spring to get some room in my shop before I install it. I wanted something that would still look like it was built in 58-62, so a 283/327 was a pretty obvious choice.

I plan on repainting/pinstriping the firewall Dave Bell style when the flathead comes out.

I'll keep y'all updated but progress will be slow as I've got a lot of other work to get done first. Hopefully by May I'll have my '40 in the shop.

Rodders were dropping smallblocks into old Fords before most people on this board were born. Do it and don't look back. Just my opinion.

Put it in, then put the hood back on and keep it closed. 40's look better with the hood on anyway....:D:D:D

I’m not a big smallblock guy. If I were you. I would sell that smallblock to make a profit since you got it for next to nothing. Then buy and olds or a nailhead and drop that in. That will be way faster stock than a sbc and way more traditional and cool. Ik sbc are traditional but they are super played out. And nothing beats the look of a nailhead or the valvecovers on an olds

both these are fairly recent builds--maybe 3000 each but another one with a 327 has 20K so far.The one in the woody is fairly mild-the one in the 40 has a bit more cam etc-both run extremely well! The one in the other 40 with 20K miles is also a bit snotty too.

I tried to type in hoodless and spell check changed it to hopeless...hmmm

SBC in a Ford isn't exactly ground breaking. I like the color of the car though.

I'm not going for groundbreaking. Just traditional, reliable, and bitchin'!

  28. My early sbc in my '39 (Avatar), it looks like Chevy orange in the pic, but I actually painted it Ford red. Not anything special, but backed up with a Muncie 4 speed, this old sixties build hits the mark for me.
I've had several '40's with Flatheads, this sbc combination instills greater confidence and far more of the fun factor in my book.
I Like the Olds, Cad, Buick choices mentioned also..hmm maybe in my convertible's future.

  29. The best part is that it's a "Corvette" 327!

Well everyone knows that back in the day when Chev introduced the 265 then the 283 a whole pile of hot rodders wanted and got one.
To me an old SBC is as traditional as a Flathead along with Olds, Cad and Nailhead motors.
I to have had both SBC and Flathead and I like both.
