You know, you might have something there!
Did I ever mention that there's a weird whistle coming from the motor when it's running!
I'll probably have to get it rebuilt at some point. But I'm going to start with the tank and work my way forward.
    Thanks for the info!

Whistle usually indicates a vacuum leak some where.

    Ok guys, quick update.......
    (No pictures today, sorry)
I bought a new fuel filter
    (plastic see through kind)
so I could see what's going on.
Also, removed and cleaned the spark plugs
(they were blacker than the ace of spades! )
O also tightened the carb bolts and the vacuum line connections.
(Got rid of most of the whistle)
So when I first started it, after priming the carb, it ran really well.
Still a dead spot but way better.
But after it was warmed up it got worse.
It wouldn't idle by itself and when it died I would have to prime the carb before it would start.
I tried adjusting the idle screw and it didn't seem to affect it to much.
I also noticed that the fuel filter wasn't even half full when running.
So I'm thinking that I might need a new fuel pump.
Only problem is I can't seem to find any for sale!
Do you guys have any suggestions?
How much of a hassle would it be to wire up a electric pump?
Does any of you guys have a line on a spectra premium A1354MP fuel pump?
Man I'm totally lost on this thing!

I assume it has vacuum wipers so a dual pump?

I hope the plugs were dry black instead of wet black. Dry means a rich fuel mixture. Wet means worn rings, valve seals, or valve guides.
Find the proper way to adjust your specific carb. (In till it bottoms out (softly), then out a certain number of turns.) This is not a recommendation, just a memory.> My uncle used to adjust until the radio antenna stood still.
Take the hose off at the carb and run it into a bucket. Crank it over a few times and see how much it pumped.
Wiring an electric pump is no problem. Fused 12v wire to switch, wire to pump. The pump has a ground wire attached that you bolt through where you mount the pump. The pump has to be near and downhill from the tank, slanted upwards.
    (Outlet up)
That's just the way those filters are. I don't get it either.

Yeah, I tried adjusting it, and I just couldn't find the sweet spot.
Wouldn't idle on it's own at all
And yes the plugs were dry black, not wet
The only reason I think it might be the pump is because I'd have to prime the carb every time to get it to start.
To it seems like it's not getting enough gas.
But that's just my VERY uneducated guess!
    I really have no idea.

I also tried the bucket thing and got 5 ounces on 10 to 12 pumps.
When someone else thought it should be closer to 8 to 9 ounces.

Try then and now auto in Massachusetts for fuel pump rebuild kits. Did you ascertain if the wiper is vacuum or electric? An inline electric fuel pump will pass through the mechanical pump so you can mount one without worrying about the original.

    Hey, thanks for the info!
Yes my wipers are vacuum, however, they bypassed the pump and are running straight off the motor.
I'll give then and now a look this evening when I get off work.
    Thanks again!

While you're trying to diagnose the engine disconnect the wipers and plug the inlet at the engine. That will eliminate the wipers as a source of a vacuum leak.

Also I'd focus on the carb and not the pump. That half filled filter you mention above is normal and the pump is working well enough that you should at least be able to get the engine to idle.

If the carb is running rich and fouls the plugs you also need clean plugs to diagnose as the engine prob wont idle well or at all with dirty plugs.

Also make sure the carb base and intake plate are not leaking by running an unlit propane torch around both and see if there is a change in idle.

Lastly if you haven't already tear down the carb and clean it well.

I haven't read all the way back. Maybe the carburetor needs a good shot of cleaner. Start it and work the throttle while you spray it. Sometimes (usually always) I take off the vent hose and spray it in the bowl so it cleans jets/passages. While you're there, pump the throttle and see if the accelerator pump is working.(if it hasn't been suggested) There should be a strong stream.

    '6t -
I was writing when you wrote "tear down". Not a bad idea.

If that's the original fuel tank, I bet it is, it will never be right until it's replaced.
Years ago I put together this handy-dandy fuel pump. All it is is an inexpensive $15 universal electric pump from eBay, an MTD rechargeable battery (20 volt, clearance from Wal-Mart $8), a switch and 3/8 fuel hose.
I put suction side down tank filler my '64 and pumped into a bucket. It looked like stump water.
I replaced tank in wife's 55 and my 58 Nash. Both had a bucket full of gunk. New tanks they run great.
With that pump you can pump from a 5 gal gas can up to carb...see how it runs.
Of course you have to be extremely careful fooling around gas.
Some people use gas tank coating. I'd rather replace tank with new.
Running vacuum wipers from engine the wipers stop when vacuum is low, acceleration or load which is why the dual pump, vacuum portion runs wipers.

Yeah, I've tried to locate a new tank but, it seems no one reproduces it.
And the closest thing that might work is a Mustang unit but then I'd have to reroute the exhaust and a few other things.
I'm still planning on dropping it when I fix the rust back there.
I'll probably just coat it and see how that works, unless I can find a replacement by then.

I coated the gas tank on my 58 Chevy with the kit from Eastwood back in the early 90's, and it's still working fine. In the early 2000's, I took a 41 Pontiac tank to a place in Rockford, IL, and they coated it inside and out; it was full of pinholes. Was around $300 back then.

I need to drop/replace my tank also.
If you drop yours please post pictures with dimensions and I'll see what I can come up with. I'll research and make calls.
    Thanks!

I'll be sure to do that.
It's going to be a while, probably when I go on vacation in April.
Until then I think I'm just going to try to replace the pump and, rebuild or replace the carb.
I'd rather eliminate all the possibilities.

    Just trying to be helpful.
I would try the least expensive route first which is take bowl off carb, be sure it's clean then a clean (1 gal is fine) gas can pumping out with a universal electric pump up to the carb. Pump wired temporarily to battery (I'd clip it on). See how it idles, etc.
    Of course outside and carefully.

    Ok guys,
    Couple of quick questions....

    1. What would be a good starting point on the idle screw to try to get it to idle?
I've messed with it so much I'm sure it's way off. Should I bottom it out then loosen it up a couple of turns? Or would that be too much?

    2. Has anyone done any business with "Galvin's AMC Rambler parts, at ramblerparts.com ?
Stumbled across his website and it looks like he has a lot of the parts I need. I'm just wondering if he's a good person to deal with before I send him all my allowance!

Thanks in advance, you guys are great!

Rule of thumb was gently bottom mixture screw then back out 1 1/2 turn

I think Galvin's is a pretty well known AMC vendor.

If you haven't already, you should join the AMC forum http://theamcforum.com Just like HAMB members can give you the skinny on everything traditional hot rod the members there can give you the skinny on everything AMC.

  28. Flatheads forever. I think that Rambler American and Willys were the last holdouts for the flathead. My aunt Lila drove a '62 wagon until '70 and gawd knows how many miles it had on it. They were never gonna break any land speed records but you can't beat one for dependable driving around.

And (yep there is always an and :) ) now that we break off at '65 instead of '64 you have a good base for your next project. A rambler sleeper. ;)

Lol, it's going to be a "sleeper" alright!
If I ever get it running right, I'm just going to change a few things then, drive the wheels off of it!
