    Hello,

Holes that were used and installed for weigh savings had its start, early in hot rodding/drag racing. The product that needed holes were taken off of the race cars and the holes neatly drilled. Most racers had hand drills and went to town making things lighter just by deleting some of the metal product. They had to be careful not to weaken the structure with the evenly spaced holes.

Almost every model of drag racer and hot rod had a series of holes drill in various places. That method depended on the actual hot rodder’s choice and taste. Otherwise, a nice coupe could end up in the Jalopy Derby at Ascot Park with the tons of holes all over the car.

In our old 1940 Willys coupe, we were never in the “holes for weight savings” mode. We actually added 1” steel plates welded into the trunk floor, over the rear axle for making weight. The added weight allowed us to qualify for the lower C/Gas division of the Gas Coupes and Sedans class, despite the addition of the 671 SBC 292 c.i. motor.

From the backyard ideas to the mass produced products with weigh saving holes already installed from the manufacturer led to new builds. The new era has a ton of choices, for every type of build.
