Beautiful cars make up the front row for the 1962 Indianapolis 500. Parnelli won the pole by becoming the first driver in Speedway history to break the 150mph barrier. Parnelli would dominate the race, leading 120 laps, before he lost his brakes, and finished 7th. Rodger Ward would go on to win his second 500 from the middle of the front row. and Bobby Marshman would finish 5th.Photo from Steve Shunck.Tommy Hinnershitz raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 1940, 41, and 48 with a best finish of 8th in 1948. I'm imagine Tommy felt similar to what Jud Larson felt when he said something like put a couple of feet of dirt on this place and I'll show you how to get around here.Jud Larson in one of Biff Caruso's cars at Williams Gove in 1951.
No ...these cars aren't numbered for a race, they are being used for atom bomb testing. Looks like they just took them off the street...don't appear to be from a Wrecking yard. The 41 Nash sedan is kind of interesting...it looks like its got a canvas (vinyl)top with filled rear quarter window and trim bars , landau style, added...plus a visor. Could have been a custom town sedan. The wheel covers on the Cadillac would be nice to have. Maybe they are still out in the desert after being blown off the car from the bomb? If you want to see Tommy Hinnershitz's complete shop go to EMMR, Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. Lynn Paxton, another legend, bought the whole shop and moved it to EMMR.
In the mid 2000's I had business at the test site. These vehicles are still there in the places they ended up.
Really.?...that would be interesting to go see them. I'm sure they were pretty much destroyed . Sent from my SM-T387V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
My dads 58 Bonneville. Tri-power bucket seats. He ran Radir mags during the nice weather months. I think this is when he was stationed at Fort Drum before going to Vietnam.
