Dug through the snow and found the rear backing plates. Degreased them and derusted them in citric acid for a couple of days. Did the same hole treatment except I left the area where the E brake goes alone. So , all 4 backing plates drilled and screens installed. 20200202_125758.jpg 20200202_125747.jpg 20200202_125816.jpg

Awesome, love everything about it - maybe just a slight chop, just my opinion. Glen

A little more to show . I spent about 6 hours today trying the 117Harv treatment on the stock model A axle that I 20200210_174555.jpg 20200210_174608.jpg 20200210_174627.jpg 20200210_174807.jpg have. Much respect for that man! I'm sure I've got several more hours ahead of me to get it anywhere near what his stuff looks like. I won't be polishing like he does, I am going to paint all my chassis gloss black . It needs to be smooth though so here's where I am. I think I will drill the axle too but have a few more days of grinding and sanding to go.

Mount the body on top of the frame & chop the top! That's what I would do, anyway.

Another 6 hr day , I only took it to 120 grit. It's going to be painted anyway but man what a pile o work. Drilled some holes too. I think my model A axle will look pretty good. 20200212_153919.jpg 20200212_153936.jpg 20200212_154039.jpg

What kind of material did you make them out of Jeff?

I made them from some 3/4 cold rolled that I had leftover from some past project

So I had a buddy stop by the other day , he's building a model A too(29 roadster). We were talking about this and that and he mentioned that he was using a torque tube and had to shorten it. He asked me what I was going to do. I said that I was going to convert to open drive and was going to order a kit for the conversion. He looked at me and said "why not do it yourself? It's something in your wheelhouse that you can do ". I thought 'he's right' I'm just being lazy and straying from my original course of doing as much as I can with what I've got on hand.
I went back to the house and started to research 'open drive conversion' I found a thread by Tman that guided me along (thanks Trent!) I thought I was going to have to go to town and buy a yoke and seal but I didn't want to so
I went out to my snow covered pile and dug out an old torque tube and a piece that I saved from my firetruck build that was part of the PTO that drove the fire pump. The yoke off the PTO thing was removed and I cut off the flange end of the torque tube. I dug through my junk drawer and found a SBC timing cover seal and measured the yoke. It was bigger than the seal but I can machine it down to the same diameter as a SBC damper. The idea of using the SBC seal just presented itself but I thought if I'm in Bumhole Saskatchewan any parts place will have a seal.
So cut , cut ,cut , machine ,weld , machine , measure , machine , fit , assemble , disassemble , adjust , reassemble and I got an open drive conversion that cost me absolutely NOTHING! All stuff was on hand and it's going to work....I hope!

Wow, nice job man! It looks awesome.
I know you probably know this but don't forget to put a vent in somewhere.

I cannibalized a fitting from some old Ford that has the tee for the rear brakes and a vent that goes through the center to hold it down.

When you flip the banjo housing to make a quick change it puts the drain plug at the top. I thought that this would be a good place to put a vent. I drilled and tapped the plug and now I have a vent and a tee for the brakes. 20200228_133722.jpg 20200228_133700.jpg 20200228_133952.jpg

On your open drive conversion Is the yoke held onto the shaft with that set screw? Looks good

I put 2 on opposite sides and made little divots so they hopefully can't slip. I'm going to use some blue Loctite as insurance.

OK , I know that I can buy these too , there's even a guy on here that makes a real nice looking forged pair. I am trying to stick to my original plan and make as much as I can.
These are made from 1-1/4 square tube with the ends covered and the notch filled. I turned the shock mounts and the bushings on my lathe 20200306_125857.jpg 20200306_125917.jpg 20200306_130156.jpg 20200306_130213.jpg . They go all the way through.
