Technical UPDATE - THE DOOR IS UNLOCKED

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by HOTRODPRIMER, Feb 27, 2020.

  1. I've had several people PM me asking me on other threads if I got in? , the answer is yes.

Cob closed it down shortly after I posted the results due to it's length and he did the right thing in my opinion, this is how I got the door open and Cobs reply.

I am no longer locked out!

I called the locksmith on my way home and got a answering service, leave a number and I'll call you back.

He said he couldn't make it today, maybe tomorrow so I came home and decided to remove the exterior door handle and try using a big flat bladed screw driver.

While I was removing the door handle I remembered I had a few extra door handles in my swap meet box, so instead of using a screw driver I dug through the box and found a handle, it is about this time I realized how much longer the square shaft is, I know they have to be cut to fit different applications.

As I inspected them I noticed the one that I had just removed appeared to be broken on the end, I picked up the handle that was longer ,stuck it in the door and pushed it in place and I heard something fall down inside the door, obviously a piece of the original shaft.

I turned the door handle and low and behold the door opened!

The extra door handle that opened the door doesn't have the correct curved piece behind the handle. so I have to order one, pretty reasonable compared to what I feared might happen with a hammer. :) HRP

Man I even hate to think how vulnerable our early rides are with two screws holding the handle on...A screwdriver and something to fit the square bore and Bobs in Your Hotrod NOT just your Uncle... That is why I'm vigilant with my Hotrod watch always...

This was all about a broke door handle?
Just replacing one will not open a door on these cars locked from the inside.

Glad you got in ! Now I’ve got a question for you ...... the spring in my 3 window broke. So got a new spring and now sometimes when I close the door it locks itself. Got to be damn careful that I don’t have the suicide latch unhooked on the passenger side or I’m hooped ! Can’t figure out what is happening ?. Have had it apart and all seems ok .

  14. You might have a problem with excessive wear in part of the latch itself, Dave Doolin has rebuilt several latches for me, does the pivot where the inside door handle attaches to the inside of the door still have the small "S" spring?

I'm not saying that is the problem but it was on my old coupe. HRP

  15. Originally I assumed that somehow the door was locked because it would not open, the outside door handle should not move if the door was locked so I assumed something in the door latch mechanism had broken but really didn't know what happened

It turned out to be a broken shaft on the door handle.

That's the best explanation I have, believe it or not. HRP

well that was easy - saved money for a locksmith that likely would not have figured it out

Man, I'm glad that it was only a car problem. When I read the thread title I was afraid you were in Brenda's doghouse.

Just saw your pic but a 3 window latch is completely different , thanks for your efforts !

  26. I just grabbed a image from the internet not knowing you had a 3 window, but the 3 window does indeed have a "S" spring, this spring keeps the door handle in the correct position. HRP
