Okay I'm looking at purchasing Speedway Motors front disc brakes for my 1948 Mercury. I have a really hard time on find any one who's know what backspace to run. I have a set of stock ford 15x6 so I am told. Tires are ther are 15inch I like keep it looking stock. I want to know were to get a steal wheel that will work with my center cap. 48 merc caps and beauty rings. The wheel needs to 15x6 Bolt Pattern:
5 on 5.5" with wheel 3-7/16" center hole. Thanks Thomas

If in fact you have the original Mercury 15" wheels, they will work with the Speedway kit IF you use a 1/4" spacer behind the wheel.
The spacer can be sourced from Advance Auto Parts for not much money.
    Works for me.

Please measure ( and let us know) the wheel mounting surface to wheel
mounting surface measurement both BEFORE and AFTER installing your kit.
It would be nice to know if their is a difference.
    Good luck.
    Thanks.

So Mercs had 15"s and not 16'"?

    '42 thru '48 Mercury's were 15" x 5" with a 5 1/2" bolt circle.

Personally I like the spacers that are drilled for what you want, flat, and not cast with over sized slotted holes. That maybe OK for aluminum/mag style wheel but not steels. Good luck.

I put this same basic kit on my 1939 Ford Coupe about 12 years ago. F-150 rotors and big GM calibers - This car has a Columbia 2 speed that I want to keep. Easy to install - I just used a Granada disk/drum split master cly. For now - have the stock 40 Ford gear with a 4.44 ring - and a Chevy 327 - 300 hp and Muncie 4 speed. This was my Dad's high school hot rod. With that gear - the overdrive is really needed. When this car is road worthy - might regear to 3.78.

For now - I have 1974 F-150 15x6 Ford truck steel wheels. They clear great front and rear. Future wish list is 15x6 steels and 1956 Ford Tk caps. These big disk really stop the coupe.

Mike, Did your track width change as a result of installing this kit?

I installed it about 12-15 years ago - it did not change the offset. Really - the 15x6 ford rims sit closer to the fenders on the rear - than front.

my rear end is a Columbia 2 speed - I almost think 15x7 rims might be too wide for the rear - it will be tight, vs the 1957 Ford 9 inch on my other 2 1939 Fords.

My Dad used a 1965 Chev Z bar with a 1940 Ford Petal set for the clutch. I reworked the connection from Z bar to clutch fork with heim joints and legnthened the postion further out on the clutch fork. Works Ok - if from scratch - I would try a cable like a T-5 in a Mustang.

pic of the z- bar - with 1940 petals. If starting from scratch - 1939 petals and reclocking the arm to the 6:00 position should connect with clutch fork without a z bar. Mine is OK now - but plan B was the Drake repop 1939 petals. Z BAR 39.jpg
