Hi H.A.M.B, I was hoping one of the old Ford Sages, old timers, or just plain fact geeks could help me figure out which enginea were "typically" in the 1954 F100 when equipped with a 3 HD transmission? I've read somewhere that the 317 yblock was equipped with the 3HD (heavy duty 3 speed) trans but I've never seen 239 yblock mentioned anywhere. Thanks in advance
54 F100 came with either a 223 six or a 239 Y block. Not sure what a 3HD trans is? I've had a few F100's and never heard of that. F100's were a light duty PU, they came with a column shifted 3 speed or a t98 4 speed to my knowledge.
3HD is the trans code for 3spd Heavy Duty; you’ll find it in the data plate in the glove box. Just a ‘3’ would indicate the light duty, I’m not sure if that is a 3.03, just the older Ford built 3spd, or the T86. I’m thinking maybe the 3HD might be t85 without OD? When I wrote the question I had just looked at an F100 on CL and the data plate had 3HD in the trans a lot and I was thinking maybe there was an F100 Heavy Duty trim whee Ford used the HD engine and trans like The Lincoln (279/317) yblocks. Unfortunately I didn’t get a pic and I forgot the serial.
It wasn’t the 3.03, for sure, as th 3.03 didn’t come out until 1963. A Fordomatic and most likely , an overdrive were also available. Memory says the HD 3 speed had a floor mounted shifter. Light duty was on the steering column
I've been into the 53-56 F-100 thing since I was a Kid, still am at 70+. I have never heard of 2 different strait 3 speed gear boxes in those years ever. I was big into parting as well as building and if I've had my hands on One I've parted out way to many. A 3 speed was a 3 speed.
No indication of where you live, however if the truck is Canadian built, you have a 239 ci flathead V8 Ford Canada did not use the Y block until 1955. No 6 Cyl engine was available in Canada until 1957. This applied to Both cars and trucks. The 255 ci may have been available on larger trucks but still a Flathead
Ive got a 53 truck its a 3/4 ton. It has the Heavy duty 3 speed. that trans is a collum shifted top loader. It requires a slip joint driveshaft and has a cable operated band type emergency brake on the rear of that trans. Its physically as large as a granny 4 speed. It even uses the same bell as that granny 4 speed does. My 53 had the larger 261 six engine.
