Some of the early 30's Hudsons had potential. There was a '34 coupe for sale on here a few years ago that piqued my interest.

Nice thought. There are a lot to choose from and would make really nice rods. I did up a 1919 Dort open car and it turn out to be a fun driver. Relatively inexpensive to build but..........for those who have their hearts set on a Duece.......none of these will do. So, go ahead keep saving meanwhile those that go this route can be out there on the road and enjoying the ride! :).

Essex was pretty cool. Suicide doors and might have had a little more room.

Well the article is about those who really want a 32 Ford (I understand why they are so popular) but if we are talking hot rodding I've always thought a model A or even a Tall T as great alternatives. If I was after building an early hot rod I would start with either as an affordable alternative. I like either just as well.

I think Dodges of that era had bodies by Budd that were all steel rather than being framed in wood like others.

  11. 32 Nash. After rodding one in the early 80's I saw first hand just how cheap Henry Ford really was. The Nash was way better built, and had more style than Henry's offering. Comparing the two was like trying to compare a Duesenberg to a Yugo. 32 Fords became popular with hotrodders at the time not because they were better, but because they were cheap and you could find 'em everywhere.

My uncle had a '34 Stude coupe. Always thought that was cool. Also a friend of mine had a '36 Plymouth coupe...came close to trading my '40 for that. Gene.

My 32 alternative "someday I'll start " is a 32 Pontiac Title, 400 Pontiac engine and a plan for a scratch built Roadster based on a 32 Pontiac .... its all built in my brain at this point

I would stay away from early 30s GM .I am doing a 33 Chev PU and it took a whole winter to replace/ restore all the wood in the cab. Chrysler products of that era were very strong with very little wood.

I don't think the spring setup matters much on full fender cars, especially with a nice splash apron.
Fender less cars yes, the Ford setup looks better.

    Hello,

The one other hot rod alternative that falls within this grouping is
@Ron Funkhouser owned/built, 34 Dodge Sedan Delivery. Ever since seeing this different sedan delivery here on the HAMB, it reminded me of a cool hot rod that is well built and fits right into this category of an alternative to a 32. A lot of people do not like sedan deliveries from way back, mainly because they had business/industrial connotations associated with them. (Milk deliveries, painters, beer deliveries, plumbers, sign painters, etc.) There were even the popular Helms Bakery delivery trucks. But they all had a business type car/truck feeling and it was usually not a family car/truck.

As hot rod people, it takes all kinds and there is a huge sedan delivery following. They are not all 1932 Ford sedan deliveries, either. Ron Funkhouser’s 34 Dodge Sedan Delivery just has that look and attitude of a cool hot rod. It certainly would look nice parked in our small two car garage.
upload_2020-2-21_7-43-49.png One of the nicest alternatives to the 32 whatever…

As a previous owner of a Flathead 40 Ford Sedan Delivery as a teen and another very similar but slightly different 327 powered 40 Ford Sedan Delivery in our 20s, they were both cool hot rods to use as daily drivers. They were pure sedan deliveries and not one made out of a 2 door sedan with the rear window areas filled with sheet metal. At the time, sedan deliveries were not accepted as much as other models of hot rods. Times have changed and they became useful forms of transportation and daily family use.

In Bixby Knolls, there was only one Ford Sedan Delivery owned by a friend. He took out the 348 and put in a Flathead… Then I bought it for a much lower cost and was the only one with a sedan delivery in this hot rod central area of Long Beach.

I used to have a 34 Plymouth with factory IFS. That car steered and handled way better than both my 34 and 40 Fords. I've never understood why Ford went with the single spring setup. My next project will be another 34 Plymouth.
