My new daily police pursuit vehicle arrived today, I just paid for that thing Wednesday afternoon and it made it here to Buffalo,NY from Chicago this afternoon, three car gooseneck, guy must've been hauling some ass. A very easy pleasurable experience all around, great looking and running vehicle, Happy Valentine's Day to me !

 

Picked up the crate engine for my c10 and took the old one out. Phase 1 completed

Today I went for a Jog and some pull-ups at the local park, but yesterday was dedicated to continuing the 5sp swap...

 

After weeks of interruptions, I finally got the spring pack assembled with the rear end and installed in the frame. Next, fabbing the rear wishbone.

 

CX is the daily of my son. In this household we love everything that has wheels and goes "Vroom".

Picked up an o/t daily driver yesterday, still thirty years old and American (Canadian, anyway) made, gonna replace the POS we're using now. Replaced the center link in the Galaxie this morning, nice to have a new, straight, untwisted, and shiny part in there.

I finaly hung a sign I've had for years, but never had a good place to hang it, but now I do.

Yesterday the club had our annual winter garage tour, this time it was at Gor-Den Racing Engines which was one of the areas first performance engine rebuilding facilities and where Jim Oddy and others learned their trade. I found this engine block waiting it's turn, the foundry guys were jokesters that day..ha ha ha

February 17th 2020 Planned to lift the engine block out over the weekend. Drained the oil pan first. My machinist friend, Jon Carey, gave me a red ass dressing down when I told him that the water anti-freeze contaminated oil had been stewing in the pan four years. I got a mulligan this time. The oil was consistently black and poured smoothly. Looks like most of the water from the blown head gasket went out the exhaust ports.

Took the water pump off the front of the block and then tackled the damper as I thought it was blocking the front engine mount bolts, I have a "universal" harmonic balancer puller/installer tool that I've used on two engines so far. Both times, none of the eleven different puller bolts fit the damper I was trying to remove. Damnation! The puller holes on this damper were smaller than 3/8" and larger than 5/16" . None of the metric bolts I could find fit either. Why would anybody use a bastard thread like 11/32" fine for this purpose?

After a two hour shop search, I went shadetree mechanic on it and drove a 3/8-24 tap thru the puller holes. It was a risk since there were only two but it worked. The damper was off in a matter of minutes after I got the puller set up.

February 18th 2020 After the damper was off, I realized what I thought were engine mount bolts were not mount-to-frame bolts and could not be removed with the mount in place. They were carriage bolts (my nemesis) sandwiching the three parts of the mount together. The mount-to-frame bolts turned out to be behind and were three in number. The two on the outside came off easily, The one in the middle, directly under the crankshaft, did not want to move. I messed around with it the rest of the day without success. The next day, I went at it with the impact wrench and that finally did the trick. The rear mount bolts on the bellhousing came out quickly too.

Took Deerslayer off the jack stands, Put the work bench on furniture dollies and moved it out of the way and jockeyed the Carroll-Taylor engine hoist into position. The Jimmy block is now out and was the last big item to come off the chassis in this build. Beer of the day was Tommyknocker Brewery & Pub's TK IPA.

 

Made some progress on the wiring harness. Taught myself how to lace wires and gave it a go... didn't come out to bad for my first attempt I guess.

 

Built a hood for my Tudor . More tweaking and fitting in morning. The mount the hinges and start the sides .

It took me 3 hours to install the lower left chrome trim on my 1955 tbird after 2 of my sons replaced the windshield Sunday. Lots of trial and error, mostly error!!

 

Installed a new starter solenoid on the daily driver since it decided to stick on when I was going to work this morning,if it was a GM vehicle it most likely would have been set on fire since I feel like crap and got my back sore and not wanting to crawl on the ground to replace it.

 

Originally GMC’s 2 lower timing cover bolts had nuts and went thru the front main cap. Most guys tap the holes for 3/8” and use header shoulder cap screws with a 3/8” head making it a lot easier to put back together.

 

Saw a kit for a bunch of $$$$ to add lights behind the reflectors on my 56 Ford. Bought 2 dash light sockets and two 57 light bulbs for $10.53 at a local auto parts store, drilled two 5/8” holes above the backup lights, and now have an extra stop/turn lamps. Living in South Little Saigon you need all the help you can get.

I think the engine's builder, Tony Pascarella, already did that on my 302. My stovebolt 235 which I'm going to after this build has not had the conversion will need it due to the new finned timing cover.

February 19th 2020 Found I miscalculated when I lowered the Jimmy block unto the old tire I was going to rest it on until I got the bellhousing off. I need the engine to lay on its side for that operation but I reached the limits of the hoist before it was fully down. This will require some Deep Ponder Mode thinking. I did manage to push it upright and get a 2x6 under the passenger side bellhousing mount, keeping it upright, to take the tension off the head bolts used to lift it.

 

I always struggle with that "Deep Ponder Mode" thinking.

 

A moving dolly can be re engineered with plywood and blocking , Inexpense . I used to store engines under my work benches...

 

Get'n the "twist" out of a buddy's frame

 

I've got two furniture dollies in use currently. The Deerslayer's mini-van bench seat and other interior items sits on one and the Jimmy's seran-wrapped head rests on the other. I'll be getting another for my nailhead block when I take it off the engine stand to make way for the Jimmy block.

More than half the tools and storage items in my shop are an wheels.

 

Etch primed the back side of my '47's dash followed by some gloss white; should make easier on these old eyes when I get to wiring stuff. Got the air cleaner lid back from the chrome guy; looks a lot better now. Mounted more electric crap on the wire panel for the '33; now to get it back in the car and hook up the rest of the wires.
