When installing windshields in a 54 ford, does all the stainless around the windshield go on at the same time or is there a way to work it into the rubber gasket after the install of the windshield? 54chop

    54chop,
Put the gasket around the glass then put the stainless trim into the gasket. Make sure you have the trim all the way into the rubber so that the little offset at the bottom of the stainless pops into the bottom slot in the rubber, then put your rope into the pinchweld slot in the rubber and set her in the whole. Make sure you are centered and rope it in. If the stainless is sticking out further than it should be anywhere, push it back out and start over. Do not try to force the stainless back in to place after you are partially or fully in or you are going to screw up the stainless. Later, Bob

Thanks for the knowledgable reponse. What you wrote is what I've attempted but the stainless at the bottom is holding the glass too far away from the pinchweld. Probably need more push from the outside. 54chop

    54chop,
You should be able to set the bottom of the windshield damn near directly on the pinchweld. Have the rope begin and end at the bottom middle of the windshield. You should not have much of a gap at all if any before you even begin pulling on the rope. If you do have a gap somethings not right. After you have it roped across the bottom and have started up the A pillar have the guy on the outside pull down on the windshield, gasket and all to get it fully over the pinchweld across the bottom. Give the windshield a few slaps with the palm of your hand (take wedding band off) and you will see the windshield start to suck in toward pinchweld. Rope a little more, slap a little more till your all in. Any places that don't lip over the pinchweld be sure to hook tool over the pinchweld. Take your time you'll get it. If the windshield seems extra tight, lube up the gasket with glass slip or linseed oil or if nothing else available soapy water. Good luck, Bob

  5. yeah! what Bob said! I always start at the bottom then up one side 3-6 inches then up the other side 3-6 inches . pull down on the glass and make sure the bottom is fully seated at that point you know your centered then pull the rope up around one top corner then the other side up around the top corner. if you have a problem the bottom is most likely not properly seated. if all is good pull the rope across the top
