Looks like way more truck than I can swing. I had a '46 when I was in high school for a while. Like everything else time for bills meant that truck needed to go. They are neat old trucks.
Hello Fordy The engine mechanic I'm working with is a flat head "Yoda" old dragster guy and though I didn't get it Exactly the way he wanted he did say that they realized it was better to ramp it up from the lifters to the piston chamber rather than relieve it. For those who disagree, I can ask him exactly what he said because I'm still learning and can be leaving something out. Though he can be found on the net because he does have a flathead engine business I would out of respect let him know about this conversation before giving out his info.
Newest update family of the H.A.M.B. My engine guy has the engine and gave me an ataboy on my porting, polishing and oil port drilling and tapping. He is going to vat the engine and its parts then preform his super man X-ray vision on it and as long as all is as he suspected will bore the bores .125 over and mill the heads Meanwhile I am stripping the frame and going to blast and paint it. The cab will need some rust repair and the an interior paint job.
Hello to all who check in A very sad day has arrived! My amazing condition engine is not so amazing after all Master Yoda ran the the block through his vat and then pressured up the block and found that which we hope to never find. "Crack" Now! I'm a skilled metal manipulator and have gone through many of your threads and will attempt to repair this crack but will also begin the search for a good block I'll get some pics out of the repair attempt. The question I have is. Are any of you running on a crack repaired block?
Where is the crack? There are many cracked flatheads; some fixed, some ran with them. Your engine yoda will know if it can be repaired. No reason to toss the block if it is repairable.
Prepare for pics Wandering! And yes he did say he's seen these cracks fixed so I'll give it a try. I'm with you on the no reason to toss if repairable
Here's what's happening I drilled where i thought the crack ends were Took a sharp point carbide and followed the crack about half the casting depth And cooked the crack run and let it cool slowly Next I'll re drill the ends Grove to nearly full depth'ish (yes I just created a word that until now didn't exist) Heat the seam back up and then start the brazing bonanza Set up for another slow cool And pressure test While all this is happening I'll be chanting "Please Please Please Please worrrrrrk!
Take a look Gents Keep in mind as J'st Wandering said and any of you following have thought. Ready a plan B As you'll see and if you zoom in I have thoroughly followed the crack to each end where I've drilled through before the grind started Tomorrow I weld. Please send your gas-n-gears positive karma my way
Hello H.A.M.B.'s I regret to inform you but plan B is now in action. Though the weld looked good I heard a loud "POP" so if any of you know of an old buddy near Tucson with a block to spare I'm looking. I'll keep you posted, mean while I'm going to go sulk in self pity for a spell (The mythical rare engine is still a myth) and then pull up my big boy pants and move forward
Great effort to save the block, Jim! Sometimes you win...sometimes you lose, but nobody can say you didn't try.
Hey Jim. Did you see @rfanuke 's post ? Has a bunch of flathead blocks. See if your machinist has a block crate or block plastic tote to ship. If so Greyhound Bus freight it .. both ways .. is cheap. Go to post #14 on the following thread >>> https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...ge-blocks-chevy-ford-flathead-others.1183864/ EDIT : max ship weight Greyhound is 100lbs. Can ship tote there empty .. but have to find another way back. Maybe stick it in a seat !!!
Also .. this one is on Tucson C'list. Hope it's close. No clue where you are in Arizona .. your profile is incomplete. https://tucson.craigslist.org/pts/d/douglas-flathead-ford/7065524104.html
Not to be a jerk, but why would you do all of the port and polish work before you hot tank and mag, the block . Most of these blocks have cracks somewhere.
