I pulled this out of long term (1958-1986) storage. Under 15,000 mile on her.

 

1955 2 Door Chevrolet Handyman Station Wagon

 

I'm looking for a wagon, an early '50's Chrysler or Desoto, to replace our '51 Pontiac that was wrecked in August. The search has been frustrating, but I found this on FB Marketplace from MN. This is the best of the 5 photos the guy has sent, won't replay to simple questions like, "Does it run? Does it have brakes? Floors and rockers solid?". I'd drive 10 hours in winter to look at it, and I'd buy it if he'd answer the simplest of questions, but not the poor response to questions pretty critical to describe a 65 year old car, for quite a lot of money.

 

The Firedome badge would make it a DeSoto. I believe '54 was the first year for the V-8so this looks like a '54.

Yes, it's a DeSoto, a '53. I wish the guy would have bothered to answer my questions, but he won't. Call me crazy, but I'm not gonna shell out $8K on a car 400 miles away, with no photos, no description, and no conversation about it. And people wonder why cars don't sell...

Got this '57 Courier that I've had for 40 years but I'll never get around to finishing. Lotsa extra parts. Frame sandblasted and painted. New brake lines, wheel cylinders, shoes. 3 speed overdrive. Front fender repairs have commenced since the pictures were taken. Plenty of pics, too. It's 35 miles northwest of Boston

Our '52 DeSoto (mentioned a couple of posts back), I took a leap of faith and bought it sight unseen despite the guys lack of communication skills.

 

@flynbrian48 - glad you got it. Hows the floors?

 

The car is absolutely rust free, aside from a small lacy spot on the battery tray. The one spot I was concerned about under the tailgate, where a bunch of filler was peeled loose, turned out to be what looks like a trailer tongue smacking the panel above the bumper, just off center, which had a half inch of filler on it over still shiny original paint. The right rear door has some ripples, but judging by the rear dent, I'm certain it's just terribly done body work over very minor damage. The paint job absolutely sucks, looks like catalyzed enamel, if it hadn't been repainted I'd leave the exterior completely untouched. The chrome is pitted beyond repair of the die-cast, and I hate the huge bumpers. I may try '49-'50 Chevy bumpers on it.

 

Had our annual ‘Wag Nats’ camp out recently, always a good time drinking beer and cooking sausages on your tailgate. Not a great deal of HAmb friendly wags though.

Only a couple of days of summer left here sadly.

 

I'll bet that blue and white 60 Buick goes down the road.

 

Mammoth Lakes vacation 1958

On our last family road trip in 1958, my brother and I saw plenty of cool cars. It was close to the Fall season and we saw some old cars as well as a sneaker new model. This 1959 Ford Station Wagon was at the same cabin area in the Mammoth Mountain Lodges. My brother took a movie of me coming out of the restaurant, swatting gnats away from my face. (gnats are bad for being pesky, but good for trout fishing…)




Little did we know that 1959 Ford Station Wagon was one of the first to hit the public roads in 1958. We thought it was strange at the time, but passed up on eagle-eying the station wagon. But, films do not get "Photoshopped." It was in the same lot as the teenage action in 1958. As we all know, most factories/dealers start their fall displays in September. Due to school also starting in September, it had to be August for this last family vacation.

My parents were pretty cool for the two brothers, but they would not keep us out of school in September for any reason. Some dealer just got the jump on all of the others. Or, the owner of a Ford dealership took the first 1959 model out on an extended vacation prior to the big, grand opening Fall display of the new 1959 models.

The family vacations came to a stop after this last one. It was due to the teenagers getting to large to sit in the back of any family sedan, as there was already a cool 1958 Impala in the garage. Also, my parents knew that one day, our family vacations with the cute little brothers and then growing in to teenagers was just a fact of life. Time marches on and no one can stop progress.

We never stopped at the cabins or camped in the years that followed as 20 somethings. Despite driving with my wife, (years later,) through the Mammoth Mountain area on Highway 395 from our road trips north to the SF Bay Area for vacations and photo opportunities. We were 20 somethings cruising through in various cars or staying in a funky, motel in Mono Lake, just north.

But, 20+ years later, we thought it would be nice to camp up there with our son. Same lakes, same campsites, tons of trout for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
