  3. Here's my old man's 58 circa 1961 or 62. Dual quad 283 with a 3 speed and a few "tricks" as he called them:

Prontito raced at Milan, Norwalk, Ubly and other places. Driver was Roger Davenport. Mechanic was George Foltz.

Jason I see these Prontito photos were posted on the other site by Roger's daughter. I have told stories about this car on this thread and others-don't want to keep repeating myself. If I had to chose one Vette from the era that I thought was the best on track, it would probably be this car. It was street raced by Ron Reader in the early 60s on Woodward and then switched to track use after too many tickets-running 389 and 421 Pontiacs. It then was switched to a 427 BBC running injection with a four speed in MSP. Ron sold the car to George Foltz (maybe in some sort of partnership with Roger Davenport) after the NHRA did away with modified sports at the end of the 67 season. In 68 they installed a torqueflite and then for 69 to a clutchflite, (I believe my dates are correct). Everytime this car came to the line I paid attention as it was a ball to watch it run. The car won class (B/G) at Indy in 69 and went to the quarter finals of street eliminator. Just a bad ass hot rod.

I use to live about 5 houses down from him in Fairfield. He always had nice cars. I would love to find a picture of the mid year Vette he raced at Tri State. Metallic red color. Sounded mean too. We had a bunch of nice cars and racers in that neighborhood.

Anyone know who this is? I went to Fairleigh Dickenson during this time period, and would love to know more.

White lacquer over red paint turns to pink, unless you use red check sealer and it didn’t always work. But if you shoot a coat of dark green down first it will work all the time.

    Special today :)

It's a GREAT story too long for here it's a good read. Photos and story here:

Every Chevy guy swears he knows how the big-block Mystery Motor first raced in an Impala at the Daytona 500 on February 24, 1963—and it turns out that’s totally wrong. The true story is the Mystery Motor actually made its racing debut a week earlier—and not in an Impala.

It turns out the big-block Chevy Mystery Motor wasn’t first raced at the Daytona 500 in a midsize Chevy like we all think. It was, in fact, raced in two 1963 Corvette Z06 split-window Sting Ray Corvettes Mickey Thompson built in 1962 to race in the 1963 NASCAR American Challenge Cup. That makes these two Corvettes the first cars to ever have a big-block Chevy for power. But that’s not all. The big-block originally nesting in their engine bays was not any sort of production big-block but was what’s known as a Mystery Motor, one of maybe 50 (50, no typo) Mark IIS prototype engines produced in the development of what eventually became the 396ci/427ci/454ci Chevrolet big-block.

  20. That panel painted split is badass /\ Look at the date of the photo (Nov 64) Whoever built that car most certainly had some folding money in his pocket to be able to take a 1 year old Vette and throw wheels, tires, custom paint, and the triple taillamp treatment into an almost brand new car.

I don't know if the about "folding money" has the same connotation back then. I moved to LI in 66 from NYC and almost every teenager put every dime from their paper route to pumping gas into their car. There where many new GTO's, SS Chevelles and all sorts of Corvettes. Plus Mopar's and Fords. Almost all had mag wheels on them, that was the first thing everybody did. I was a poor boy but had a 57 Chevy that I put every cent in. It was different then compared to today.

One of my older car friends told me he had a buddy that's dad owned a Chevrolet dealership. His buddy showed up one day with a brand new 64 Corvette. The first thing they did was put some glass packs on it, Astro wheels, and torch the front springs! He said his buddy drove the hell out of it and would let any of his friends drive the hell out of it too! He told me later on they sprayed some flames on it! I wonder where it went?

  24. Completely restored to look just like the the dealer brochure, i'm sure.

I too had a 57 Chevy and that was my M.O.!
Needed headers, mowed yards, needed a Hurst shifter, swept floors, needed a Holley, babysat neighbors kids, wanted Cragars (really bad), mowed more yards.
