There are some using the fires for political purposes, which is disgusting , so we have fake news in abundance. Fact is some fires were started by arsonists, some by lightening, some by ember attack ahead of main fires, some by idiots chucking butts out of car windows, others who knows? It’s so bloody dry a mouse running fast could ignite the bush

They have a lot of heat detection equipment this pick is near me ( the blue splotch) , it shows heat, they are struggling to get water bombers near ( they also have heat detection) due to smoke. You can see spot fires ahead of the two big fronts some were from an electrical storm that these fires seem to help build . A lot of the fires in nsw are in places people can’t get to so they are trying to direct fires rather than try and fight them , last few days have been cool , previous to that up to 45c (112F) for a few days then 13c , very odd , but then there was little sun through the smoke.

I keep in touch with my mate in NSW to ensure he is doing well, along with a few other OzRodders I have met over the years.

So after a long time of being surrounded it hit us yesterday, huge fire front and one massive fireball went between our property and a neighbour impacting another neighbour behind us . Spot fires all around and a long day and night. No propert lost in our valley but lost houses all around. Next 7 days is spot fire watch. Guy nearby had a good collection of 60’s cars dunno if they survived.

Glad you made it safely through that!
Any predictions on when these fires will end?

Even when it rains we are still getting fires started by lightning. Our Summer (fire season) has been forecast to be a long one.

  13. We've had a bit of rain in the last 24 hours and things have improved.

Half of NSW (the State with Sydney in it) is currently under extreme fire warnings even with the rain.

We need 4 or more inches of rain across most of the Country to have any real effect.

  14. Our worst fire, the Shoalhaven fire, is now officially out.
It burnt through 449,621 Hectares, destroyed 312 homes and 173 damaged but 1889 saved by the Firies..
The fire burnt for 74 days.
I'm not sure how many died but quite a few.
499,621 Hectares is an area 25% bigger than Rhode Island and almost as big as Delaware.
We now have flooding in many parts of the Country.
    A famous poet Dorothy McKellar wrote the following;

    I love a sunburnt country,
    A land of sweeping plains,
    Of ragged mountain ranges,
    Of droughts and flooding rains.
    I love her far horizons,
    I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!

This is a small part of the poem.
It explains what we love about the place.
