I still have a set of original full length ribbed laker's. They're made out of 1-3/4" OD tubing. The depth of each rib looks to be around 1/32". Here's a photo:

  2. HAHA Stuff like this always reminds me of my days working at the music store and having hot moms come in and ask for a Big Muff for their kid. Few added the Pi part.:D

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the process of rippling the pipe called Swagging or something like that? Looks like a HAMB member needs to just start making them again. There seems to be a market. I know I'd take some for the belly burners on my RPU.

I read this whole thread just to find out why someone posted a photo of a fuzz box.

Personally I think it looks cheap and goofy. Kinda like a flex radiator hose.

Yes you did. I went out and put the caliper on them for you guys.
Pipes are 1.75" diameter. (why is there always metal shavings on my tools?)
    upload_2020-2-6_16-52-10.png
The ribs are .6255 inches apart (seriously, if the shavings aren't all over my tools they are stuck in my palms).

Thanks for the pipes Mark! The truck is for my wife and she likes the ribs!

Here is a pair I had made and plated. UNBELIEVEABLY expensive. Plating was $1400. Fab work just as bad. IMG_0598.JPG

I dinked around on my lathe and had some limited mostly unrepeatable success .... but I think @Tuck was working on a die to form them????

  15. If @Tuck does, I am up to order some! The GMC needs em!

I talked with @Tuck about a year ago and he said he was working on a die. Haven't heard anything since.

I assume that the ribs shown in the link attached below (a set of piping bellows) are too deep for the look? They are deep like the ones in Post 4 of this thread, not shallow like the ones in Post 2.

If they suit the look, you could cut the bellows ends off and weld midway in a length of normal exhaust pipe. If not, maybe a bellows manufacturer can make a profile to suit.

I looked at expansion bellows, but they are usually pretty short.

If you were going to try doing this with a pipe cutter, I think you'd have more success using a 4 wheel cutter like a Ridgid 42A rather than a standard cutter that has a single cutting wheel and a pair of cylindrical rolls. With a 4 wheel cutter, the only contact with the tubing is at the wheels so you don't get pressure from the rolls that will tend to flatten either side of the groove you're trying to roll into the pipe. Also, a standard single wheel cutter tends to push thin wall tubing into an oval shape as the cutter travels around the pipe. A 4 wheel cutter is going to provide more balanced pressure around the pipe, so it should roll the groove in with less distortion of the tube.

I've got a Ridgid 300 pipe machine at my business shop. I'm sorta tied up for the next week and a half finishing up some stuff, but after that I'll experiment a bit with some exhaust tubing and see what sort of luck I have with rolling the ripples into it.

Sounds like an interesting project for an attempt at hydro forming.
Build a die with the appropriate ripple profile into the inside and clamp a piece of straight tubing into it.

Pressurized with high pressure water and the tubing conforms to the die.

I have 2 cars that need them. No pressure, just know that I can't finish them until you make the pipe available....;)
