Well off the top of my head there is HOT RODS TO HELL ...a mid ‘60’s flick filmed in California desert with a gassers out Vette and a jacked up model A sedan terrorizing a family . “CHOPPERS” ...A cool B&W ‘50’s car thief flick with hot rod hoodlums , another cool early ‘70’s flick called “HOT ROD” with a Hemi powered ‘41 Willys racing a Targa Porsche 0n country roads. Another crazy one is PUSSY CAT PUSSY CAT KILL KILL KILL. Psycho bitches in vintage sports cars terrorizing in the desert. Add of course finally there iS “TWO LANE BLACKTOP “ 1971 -72.
Speedway - 1929 starring William Haines, Anita Page. Bill Whipple (Haines) is a mechanic who also thinks he's the worlds greatest mechanic, driver, lover. William meets Pat Bannon (Anita) and tries to winner her over. She's not easily impressed, takes him for a plane ride and ends up crashing the plane. He plays hero, this gets him a ride in the Indy 500 which, after a double cross, the person who offered the ride decides to drive themselve after Bill has tuned the car and placed pole position. Roaring Roads - 1935 starring David Sharpe, Gertrude Messinger. Stifled, fast car lovin rich kid finally breaks from aunties grasp to do some big time racing. David meets girl, goes gaga for her, enters race. In spite of bungling mobsters and incompetent body guards, David wins the race, the girl and finally his aunts understanding. Ah, don't you just love a happy ending. Ten Laps To Go - 1936 starring Rex Lease. Larry Evans, champion race car driver is envied by his chief rival, Eddie DeSylva (Duncan Renaldo), who has more ambitions than merely winning the races; he has designs on the motor patient held by Larry's employer. Eddie intentionally causes a race wreck that lands Larry in the hospital. Larry emerges from the hospital and finds his morale and courage has been broken. He regains his nerve and courage at the race track when he realizes that the driver hired to replace him is working for DeSylva with intentions of throwing the race. Speed - 1936 starring James Stewart, Wendy Barrie. The fast-paced world of Indy car racing provides the backdrop for this movie. The story centers on a test driver who works at a major auto plant. He and his cohorts have invented a new kind of carburetor and are feverishly working to perfect and use it in the upcoming Indy 500. On the day the carburetor is finally tested, something goes terribly wrong and the test driver and the inventor nearly die. Burn 'Em Up O'Connor - 1939 starring Dennis O'Keefe, Cecillia Parker, Nat Pendleton. Jerry O'Connor (O'Keefe)and "Buddy" (Pendleton) quit their farm jobs and head out with a midget-car to start their racing career, Jerry as a driver and Buddy as the mechanic. On the way to the track, Jerry's reckless driving causes Jane Delano (Parker) to crash her car. Her father, race-car owner "Pinky" Dalano sees Jerry break a track record in his first race and hires him to drive for him. In the Indy 500, driver Jose "Rocks' Rivera is killed when he suddenly goes blind and crashes. Two more of Delano's drivers are killed when they also go blind during the race. So Jerry, figuring his numbers up, practices driving while blindfolded, counting as he drives. During the race, Buddy figures out who and why somebody had been poisoning eye-wash of Delano's drivers, but Jerry is already driving blindly around the track...counting as he goes. Indianapolis Speedway - 1939 starring Anne Sheridan, Pat O'Brien, John Payne. Much of the footage was lifted from 1932's "The Crowd Roars" but if you dig these flicks, its worth watching at least once. Joe (O'Brien) is the three time Indy champ who continues to race to put Eddie (John Payne) through College. Joe wants a better life for Eddie and he snaps when he finds out that Eddie has quit school for a career in racing. Joe tries to teach Eddie the trade, but they separate when Eddie will not drop bad girl Frankie (you knew a chick had to be involved didnt you). When Joe causes the death of a driver at the next race, he quits racing and wanders aimlessly until he winds up at Indianapolis where Eddie is driving the Martin Special. Blonde Comet - 1941 Veteran racer Barney Oldfield plays himself as a mechanic inventor who hires Jim Flynn (Robert Kent) to test out one of his newly designed carburetors on the racing circuit. At the same time, "The Blonde Comet" Beverly Blake (Virginia Vale) races on the circuit trying to save her father's tire business. When the rival drivers meet, they fall in love, but they also manage to gain success for Beverly's father's tire business and Oldfield's new carburetor as well. Born to Speed - 1947 starring Johnny Sands, Vivian Austin, Don Castle. Man falls for a girl who hates racing beacuse both her father and brother were killed while racing. He continues to race against her (and her mothers) objection and narrowly escape death. Will their be a happy ending? Will boy get girl and live happily ever after?. The Devil on Wheels - 1947 starring Darryl Hickman, Noreen Nash. This movie is a sermon against speeding, and Darryl Hickman has it brought straight home to him when he side-swipes a car in his Hot Rod and causes a collision in which his best friend is killed. Lots of lecturing precedes and follows. The Big Wheel - 1949 starring Mickey Rooney as a race car driver. For race fans, this movie offers a rare glimpse into the past. From the garage setting, to the tracks, to the vintage racing footage. I'ts the story of Billy Coy's rise from small time local race tracks to the Indy 500. Hot Rod - 1950 starring James Lydon, Art Baker. A teenager loves hot rods! His father is the town judge and he hates them! Eventually the teen gets a '32 roadster but when one of his high school pals shuts him down while out on a date, he retaliates by souping up his rod! Typical of the genre, trouble ensues and then redemption and a happy ending. Cool scenes: five car hot rod street race and footage of dry lakes racing at El Mirage. To Please a Lady - 1950 starring Clark Gable, Barbara Stanwyck, Adolphe Menjou. Gable, a midget race car driver is joined by Barbara Stanwyck (Dorothy Thompson), a newspaper columnist critical of Gable when, during a race another driver is killed. She basically destroys his career in midget car racing. After some stunt driving, he earns enough to buy a car to enter the big car races. At first feeling guilty about hurting his career, Stanwyck seeks him out where eventually they fall for one another. The racing action is pretty good but overall, the movies a bit of a drag considering the star players. Jalopy - 1953 starring Leo Gorcey, Huntz Hall, Robert Lowery. The Bowery Boys are at it again, this time inventing a super fuel that transforms their Jalopy into the fastest car on the track. The bad guys end up with the formulation and hilarity ensues as the boys attempt to get it back. Hall tries to recreate the formula to use in the big race but has trouble until the very last minute when he remembers. Every film has its redeeming qualities, this 62 minute flick you'll have to watch to figure out just what it is. Johnny Dark 1954 starring Tony Curtis Piper Laurie, Don Taylor. Tony Curtis as Johnny (Johnny, Eddie, were their any other names used in the '50's?) takes his Woodill Wildfire (7 produced) for an action packed ride on a road race from Canada to Mexico. Good action, minimal story involving a woman and a friendship destroyed by cars and yes, the woman. The Fast and The Furious - 1954 starring John Ireland, Dorothy Malone. A convicted murderer breaks out of prison, takes a girl hostage and steals a hot rod! The female hostage takes a liking to her kidnapper and soon the two are on the run together, lovers and fugitives. Using the cover of a hot rod road rally as a front so they can get to the border and freedom, this movie can not have a happy ending for all. Hot Rod Girl - 1956 starring Lori Nelson and Chuck Connors. When his younger brother, Steve, is killed racing a hot-rod, Jeff Northup blames himself for the accident since he had built the car for his brother and had encouraged him to race it. Jeff withdraws from participating in races. "Bronc" Talbott, a newcomer, makes a play for Jeff's chick, Lisa Vernon. Eventually, the taunting-Talbott forces Jeff into a race which results in the death of a bicycling child, and evidence seems to indicate Jeff was at fault. But as all happy endings go... Hot Cars - 1956 starring Joi Lansing, John Bromfield. Car salesman and family man, Nick Dunn, gets mixed up in a stolen car racket run out of used car dealerships in Southern California. Nick is rolling in the extra dough until a detective begins to snoop around the car lot. Cool chop-shop scene where they swap out all the parts of the stolen cars. Awesome "shocker" ending involving a fight on a roller coaster! Teenage Thunder - 1957 starring Chuck Courtney, Melinda Byron. A teenage gas station attendant is obsessed with hot rods and racing. His Dad objects to hot rod racing and thinks his son is a "crazy teenager!" The teen enters a few big races and eventually wins the BIG race! Dragstrip Girl - 1957 starring Fay Spain, Steven Turell and race legend, Tommy Ivo. Car Crazy!...Speed Crazy!...Boy Crazy! Fay loves hot cars and a rich dragstrip racer. Her parents don't like either one. Enough said. Hot Rod Rumble - 1957 starring Richard Hartunian, Leigh Snowden. A hot rodder is framed for murder. All his rodder buddies in the club turn their backs on him. Even his parents! He has nowhere to turn. In the end he is exonerated during the big hot rod race. The Devils Hairpin - 1957 starring Cornell Wilde, Jean Wallace, Arthur Franz. Cocky racer Nick Jargin (Wilde) has retired from racing after nearly killing his brother on a hairpin bend on a race coarse. Unable to go on racing due to the mental scars left from the incident, Nick retires and open up a café. One day Tony Boari (Jack Kosslyn), the new champ on the block challenges him. Nick comes out of retirement to compete and face down his own demons. Dragstrip Riot - 1958 After a run-in with a tough motorcycle gang, where Gary Clarke is blamed when one of the bikers is sent out of control over a cliff, he and his girl are threatened and pursued. On to the beach riot, where the real culprit is unmasked and retaliates with his spear gun Road Racers - 1958 starring Joel Lawrence, Marian Collier. The father of a race car driver blames him for a death on the track, disowns him, and sponsors a rival racer. A showdown on the track ensues. Thunder Road - 1958 starring Robert Mitchum, Gene Berry. A veteran comes home from the Korean War to the mountains and takes over the family moonshining business. He has to battle big-city gangsters who are trying to take over the business and the police who are trying to put him in prison. Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow - 1959 starring Jody Fair and Russ Bender. A group of drag-racing fanatics get the boot from their club house after skipping on the rent once to often and decide to take up residence in an old deserted mansion. They hold a Halloween masked ball for the club's grand opening and invite everyone to come dressed as their favorite ghoul. Oddly enough, the festivities turn sour when one of the kids discovers an impostor among them in the form of an honest-to-gosh live monster, who's been hogging all the dances with the best-looking girls! Speed Crazy - 1959 starring Brett Halsey, Yvonne Lime. A hot headed delinquent hot rodder calls all the shots! You either listen...or else! The Wild Ride - 1960 starring Jack Nicholson, Georgianna Carter, Robert Bean. A rebellious punk named Johnny (Nicholson) who divides his time partying, disturbing the peace and when he's not doing that, spends his days as a dirt track driver. He eventually kidnaps his not to hip buddy's girlfriend, kills a few cops and finally sees his own life end in tragedy. Thunder in Carolina - 1960 starring Alan Hale Jr and Rory Calhoun. Story of a stock-car veteran down on his luck. Mechanic Les (John Gentry) wants to be a pro driver so Mitch (Calhoun) teaches him. Later an argument breaks out between Les and Mitch which results in Mitch having to drive himself in the upcoming big event. Alan Hale Jr. takes on a supporting role as Buddy, a mechanic who stands by his friend Mitch when the going gets rough. Events build to the main race, the Southern 500 in Darlington. Some good actual race footage. The Green Helmet - 1961 starring Bill Travers, Ed Begley, Sid James and Jack Brabham. Quality UK road race flick with scenes from such tracks as Le Mans, Silverstone, Sebring and Mille Miglia. Follows the ups and downs of a fading champion driver (Bill Travers)and his strained relationship with a younger brother who wants to take over behind the wheel. Set to retire, Greg Rafferty (Travers), gets a telegram from a tire manufacture asking him to tests a newly developed heat resitant tire. Mummy fears her boy will meet the same fate as her husband who was killed in the 1948 Italian Mille Miglia race. Guest appearance by real life Australian world champ Jack Brabham. The Checkered Flag - 1963 starring Joe Morrison, Evelyn King. Two racers tangle over a woman (who is married to one of them) with unpleasent results.Good racing from Sebring but overall, the movies a dud! The Lively Set - 1964 starring James Darren, Pamela Tiffin. Casey Owens (James Darren), a young mechanic, has developed a design for a turbine car engine, paving the way for a jet-powered auto certain to set a new land speed record. Wealthy playboy Stanford Rogers (Peter Mann) hires Casey to build the car for him to race in the Tri-State Endurance Run. Chuck Manning (Doug McClure), an engineering student Casey met in a drag race, discovers potential flaws in the car's design. After an unsuccessful test run, Rogers abandons the turbine-powered car for a traditional racing model, but Casey and Chuck rework the turbine vehicle to compete with Rogers in the endurance run. Viva Las Vegas - 1964 starring Elvis Presley, Ann Margaret. Lucky Jackson arrives in town with his car in tow ready for the first Las Vegas Grand Prix - once he has the money to buy an engine. He gets the cash easily enough but mislays it when the pretty swimming pool manageress takes his mind off things. It seems he will lose both race and girl, problems made more difficult by rivalry from Elmo Mancini, fellow racer and womanizer. The Great Race - 1965 starring Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wood, Peter Falk. Professional daredevil and white-suited hero, The Great Leslie (Curtis) convinces turn-of-the-century auto makers that a race from New York to Paris will help to promote automobile sales. Leslie's arch-rival, Professor Fate (lemmon) vows to beat Leslie to the finish line in a car of Fate's own invention.

Yesterday I was watching "Guess who's coming to Dinner" (Spencer Tracy / Sidney Portier / Kathrine Hepburn) At one point towards the end of the movie Spencer backs a mid 60's Valiant out of a Drive-In parking spot straight into the side of a passing 32' Hi-Boy roadster. Blue car with cut down rear fenders. Could swear I've seen the car in an old magazine somewhere. Couldn't believe it, but I guess in 1967 a deuce roadster was just an expendable old Hot Rod. But Damn!
Woman's World (1954) Needing to fill the position of general manager of his company, and believing that an executive's wife is crucial to her husband's success, auto industry mogul Gifford brings three couples to New York to size up: Jerry and Carol: he hard-driven and self-reliant, she willing to use her beauty to further her husband's career; Sid and Elizabeth, he ulcer-ridden and torn between achieving success and restoring their troubled marriage, she positive that his job will kill him, but gamely agreeing to play the good wife for the duration; and down-to-earth Bill, whose good-natured Katie fears that his promotion would spell the end of their idyllic familiy existence. The cool part about the movie are the design studio scenes.
