    Any dynaflow gurus in here?
    I have a 63 le sabre.
Busted torrington bearing in converter makes one hell of a mess.Bended vanes and metal shraphnells all over torq converter.
I do have spare converter but it is different in couple ways.
First, it has aluminum turbine wheel/housing where original has steel outer race one.
Turbine snout has two slots for oil pump inner gear in original part.Replacement part has two "tabs" , so it will spin oil pump gear, but not supporting it as original configuration would do.Is that an issue?

  2. If you know what the replacement torque converter is out of you could go backwards and see if it will fit into your transmission.
I know the dynaflows of the 50’s kept changing almost every year.

Well, i dont know. This pile is sitting in garage for over twenty years because of this broken transmission issue. When it came to me, i was told it has crank snout difference and converter pilot should turned in lathe for make it fit, but as i was exploring what would fit and what not, it turns out the new converter fit in crankshaft no problem and the difference is in converter oil pump snout.
You understand, this thing has been disassembled so long time, that everything important things has been forged. Now i have to put this puzzle back together.

I'm thinking that that is one of those "the only thing that fits is the exact model" things unless you do a full trans swap using an adapter.
Adapters are rather spendy but rebuiding the dynaflo and buying a correct converter isn't going to be cheap these days unless you are a Dynaflo expert and don't have to pay the labor.
https://transmissionadapters.com/collections/buick Is a common go to for adapters.

Im not a dynaflow expert. However, i do have repair countless old automatics.Cruisomatics, jetaways, powerglides and dynaflows.
But this thing having mixed replacement parts got me nervous.
Anyway, i allready ordered master overhaul kit ( not cheap) and dissassembled whole transmission.
Mostly because seller told that trans got metal particles in it.Well it didnt, but its still good idea to do major overhaul in transmission that has been sitting partially dissassembled for over twenty years, right? Whole thing makes only sense because its convertible and engine is in good shape and kept running couple times over the years, and rest of the car isnt too bad either.
Im gonna make it runner before next summer.

Well now i know why this thing has been sitting so long.
One of flexplate to crankshaft bolts has been loose and hitting against converter. Also bellhousing bolts let loose and other dovel pin broke loose.
And yesterday when i was cleaning that good sounding 401, i noticed it has about 8 inch long freeze crack on its side.Im on the edge of putting something else powertrain in this thing.

My sympathy for your unexpected mechanical grief. That has to be very disappointing.
Best wishes on sourcing a replacement power train.

A ‘64 thru ‘66 401 with either the two speed Super Turbine 300 (ST-300) or, better yet, the three speed Super Turbine 400 (ST-400) would be an easy swap. Both of those use the switch pitch torque converter.

Buick changed the block to transmission bolt pattern on the larger engines for ‘67 models (‘64 for V6 and 300 V8), but they used the switch pitch converter 400 with new case bolt pattern thru at least ‘67. The new for ‘67 400 and 430 were good engines too and would fit the chassis of your ‘63, but all the bolt on stuff is different from the 401.....

I think buick block is good quality casting.I bought high nickel cast iron welding rods.
Weld about 7/16 and hammer. Then cool with compressed air.No rush.Block has to stay cool all the time.

Today, put it More together.add oil in transmission as the converter filled up.finally got decent Idle, and correct oil level in transmission.then the scary part, put shifter in drive position.
She engaged forward drive instantly.then move selector in reverse and low position.my god, it works like a charm.
I just allow My self a few cold bewerages.
    Life is good.
