    Just poking the bear.....

That's what my stuff is, raw. Safe, but ugly. I'm leaving all the warts and scabs from previous owners and adding my own to them. It's like each bubblegum weld tells a story, some good, some, what the hell were they thinking? I see no reason to smooth and finesse what will never be seen unless you're a gopher or it's up on a lift. Like the old saying , shiny side up, greasy side down. It fits my full fat fendered car. If I had a fenderless pre war car, the frame would be as slick as the body, or as slick as I could get it.
But ya'll still make me look like a hack, I gotta do better!:p:D:D:D

For the springs I sacrificed two old stock main leaves. Reversed arched them with a roller at work. Then cut the rest of one spring pack in half and bolted them together. Fabbed up the mounting brackets similar to others I've seen advertised. Here's some photos I dug up from a few years back. As you can tell this was a total home/low budget build over 3-4 yrs. it's been a lot of fun and the Hamb has been my reference on much of it. I'm always amazed at the talented folks on here.

Like like like... all of 'em.

    Form and function. Nice.

You guys inspire me, teach me, and give me a high bar to shoot for.

You all fabricate like crazy. But the design work involved beforehand. I call it the figurin' out part... LOL. And then the unavoidable design changes as the project progresses... and more figurin' out.
    Nobody sees that.

Very similar to what I was planning. Do the jack bolts contact the spring itself or the front spring pack bolt? How did you roll the eye after you shortened the spring?

  15. Look at the pictures again. The new eye is bolted on from another leaf spring.

I didn't catch that. That explains the 3 bolts, which was going to be my next question.

QUOTE="AmishMike, .....but have one question. Front panhard bar, would expect heim joint to be on frame side instead of axle end.any reason why you did reverse?? QUOTE

It's a Pete and Jakes chassis. That's how they build them. Makes sense to me. The heim end being out on the axle lets the axle rotate more freely when setting caster and going over bumps or dips. The frame side only moves in a small arc so that seems to be the best place for the rubber bushing.

Here's a single seat variation on the theme and rear 1/4 ellipticals as well.

    IMG_0550.jpg
Chrome moly tube, mandrel bent kick-ups, and starting from the left, back bracing and roll bar with attached seat back mounting pads, all Dzus tabs, framing for instrument panel with the curved extension for firewall mounting and under that the supports and mounts for the duplex cowl steering (two pitman arms, two drag links, no tie rod) and at the front the combination shock mounts and front bumper mount, the front roll bar/body nose mount, and the front cross spring mount with weight jacking screws.

This entire weldment was zinc chromate plated in a large commercial tank. Oddly, the original zinc chromate coloring shown below, turned silverish with a little age. Notice zinc chromate finish on axle housing, shock absorber arms, backing plates, and special fabricated squared "U" bolts mounting spring to adjustable perch..

    IMG_0551.jpg
This shows the fuel tank mounting pads, and most notably the 4 bungs welded through the frame on the left side and 3 on the right. The larger one at the rear carries the 1/4 elliptical mounting pad/adjusting shaft. The next one and the most forward one are tapered for the radius rod tie rod ends while the fourth is straight through for the mechanical hand brakes, rear only. Two tapped spuds low on the roll bar mount the body, rear shock arms, and exhaust pipe.

    IMGP5654.JPG
This shows the 1/4 elliptical spring mount. Grease fitting is in center of about a 5 inch cut off torsion bar with splined adjusting arm and adjusting screw inside of the frame. The main leaf is captive but floating in an open aperture on the top of the axle tube.

The adjusting bolt contacts the flat area of the spacer piece on top of spring pack just ahead of the third clamp bolt. The short end eye is a separate piece cut off the other end of the main leaves that I sacrificed.
I cut the springs with a friction saw and drilled with titanium drill bit, all final assembly was with Gr8 bolts and nylocks. The springs mount to frame bracket with proper length shoulder bolts in double shear.
