Features Corvette hot rods - picture thread

I really like the way these old pictures get saved and passed around digitally. The paper copy may disappear but the images will still be floating around somewhere for the foreseeable future.

 

I have begun scanning hundreds of photos (mine and friends of mine) taken at Thunder Valley Dragways in Marion SD and Cornhusker Raceway Park outside of Omaha NE. These are from 40 plus years ago. I started posting some on the Modified Production thread and found enough to start posting here. Enjoy.

 

I posted some photos of Earl Britt's Pizza Man Corvette on the M/P thread but these are different photos.

Yes it’s from Dover, it looks to me like it is lifting the front wheels. 66 427 judging by the hood

 

Monday post. Another batch, probably the last till the weekend. As I posted, I am going thru hundreds of photos. Scan, Save, File and then decide which ones are H.A.M.B. friendly and many times edit them. Most of these photos were taken with less than stellar cameras and by amateur photographers. I should ad that some of the photos I inherited came from deceased friends. Along with the physical photos there was a thumb drive with images (taken at TVD and CRP) that I cannot swear were not taken from the internet. If anyone here actually took them I apologize, I take no credit. Enough typing.

 

The ole 57 needs paint real bad, this picture has me almost convinced to paint it it “hugger” orange

Jason, for whatever it is worth, I believe the red 62 above (Later) is the blue Midwest car in 68 or 69. The blue Midwest car ran under Midwest sponsorship at the 67 Springnationals but I am not sure how much they ran the car after that in the blue livery.

Ron Reader told me that the blue Midwest car was built by Butch Elkins and that it had 25% setback. I believe the red Vette has the same bumper and front wheels, axle and stance. It also looks like they ran altered, which would be correct with 25% setback. You will also note the name Elkins on the rear quarter.

Although it is few years ago, I believe this is Motor City Dragway where Butch would have run the car, as it was not all that far from the shop.

Whatever it would be a great car to stumble on but then I pinch myself and wake up.

 

Jim it is interesting that you mention that, I thought it odd the car sitting seemingly by itself, I then looked again and it does not seem to have an engine in it. Make me wonder if at a swap meet?

Pat if you blow up the photo and look closely you will see the headers. I could blow it up but it would be too fuzzy. If you look at where the engine sits in the side shot of the blue car you will see the headers in the same spot with the red car. Ron did not seem like he really liked the car all that much. He told me it had a tendency to turn left on the big end (it probably turned right as well). As I have said before, I watched Vettes with setback run and they often seemed to be a bit out of shape once they got rolling. Still like the car though.

 

The front wheels appear to be really small. Could they be 13's?

 

I don't think they made those in 13" 5 bolt.

 

Doug I believe the wheels are 15s but back then some guys used the foreign tires, if my memory serves me correctly. I happen to like the tall tires which at least in theory helped with rollout with the staging beams.

 

The tall ones certainly look better.

 

Pirelli Cinturato where the tires on a lot of those cars. I know we had them on the MG and all my friends Willys used them. I believe they were the only narrow tire around.
