I'm not out to start a riot, cause any trouble. This may have been a subject here before, but if it was I don't recall it being one in my time here. I'm fortunate in owing and building my 34, Ford 3 window coupe, I do know that. However I have been asked in a polite way more than once, 'Why not a '33?" Answer: Because I found a "34. I have noticed that the "33 is more sought after, so I've always wondered why? For me I was so damned happy to finally come across a "33/34 I didn't even care it was a 3 window coupe or 5 window. So it set me to wondering, is the 33 more desired and if so clue me in as to why, if you would be so kind.
Heck, I missed out on a '34 and ended up getting a '33. Which was fine but I always figured the '34 was considered the most desirable. But I'm new to this game.
Welp, Larry.........here's how it is for me. The body I bought was a 34 five window but the only piece I could use from it was the top. That left me open to buy either 33 or 34 parts to complete the body. The 34s had several features I didn't like as much as the 33 stuff. The 34s have that ugly [imho] little flap for the door glass to slide back into. Hate it! I also like the 33's curved hood side louvers better but I didn't use either 33 or 34 louvers. Also, the slim 33 grill top is less clunky than the fat 34s grill top. But the biggest reason of all is that beautifully sculpted curved 33 grill. The 34 grill is a hansom SOB but the 33 grill [more and skinnier grill bars] with that curve is a work of art! I would also mention the prettier 33 dash with it's engine-turned instrument cluster VS. the cheapie looking 34 dash with drilled gauge holes but I didn't use either of them in my car. 33's are just plain prettier to me.
Never heard of the 33 being more Desirable than a 34. I agree that it comes down far more to which year you find than anything else though. The differences can be counted on one hand as far as I know and the main two being that the 33 grill may be slightly more swoopy and the 33 hood had one handle while the 34 has two plus a 34 cowl has the notch to hold the hood when you put the hood up that the 33 doesn't. I had a 34 Tudor body and frame that I sold to someone from Houston in 1977. Anyone on here buy a 34 body and frame from a guy in McGregor Tx that year? I'd say it is like apples, do you like the old red, or a Granny? It doesn't matter as long as you get a good crisp apple, a 33/34 Ford doesn't really matter either as long as you have one.
Not by me, that's for sure. I really don't like how the '33 grille curves at the bottom nor do I like how the surround is so thin. It's kind of like the '55/56 Fords; '56 is just better. I guess they had a chance to review the design in '34 & '56 and improve them!
Well sounds like perfect reasoning to me and it all shows in what you'v achieved with your build. With me I like 'em all. Never was a prettier bod made IMO at least. My title may need explaining. Hot Rod is category by hamb / OR Stock why/ by me meant including both of these for discussion.
I have a 33! But like both! 33’ -Graceful, elegant Feminine, and full of curves! 34’-Bold, Confident, Masculine And Straight! (More-So) Both Scream Art-Deco! Ours at different times
In terms of the coupes, I always like the 34 better. Wouldn't be upset to have a 33 thought. As for pickups, I like 33's way more than 34's as I have never cared for the extra bead across the back of the cab and the little less chrome the 33's had over 34s
====================================================================== In soft lilting voice the 33 says, "Treat me like the lady I am, honey" and In a take no shit gruff voice the 34 says, "Bring it on asshole" That the idea 33Doll? I like it.
I would sell my soul for either, wouldn't care if it was a 3 wdo or a 5 wdo as long as it was a coupe.
I have a '34 but to me there is not enough differences between them to have a preference. Not like comparing a 28/29 to a 30/31 Model A.
I seem to remember a magazine article by Tex Smith in the mid 70's on changing a 33 to a (then) more desirable 34 even putting the hood holder in the cowl.
I've heard that there was a time when everybody picked the 34 over the 33. But the preference seems to have changed in recent decades. I agree with moriarity and many others the 33 is just a little prettier. True that not owning either makes having a preference irrelevant. But it does make having a preference much easier. I dunno, I have always liked the 34 more for some reason. But it would have to be a 3w..... no dislike for 33s at all.
Well, mine's a '33 but I would have been just as happy with a '34. They're both getting pretty uncommon and real Henry steel is a pleasure to work with. regards, Phil
That’s Funny! My other Hotrod choice is a 48-52 F-1! Like this one! It was for sale along time in Hemmings! Its perfect! If I only pooped money!
That is a nice one. I am not growing dollar bills on my trees out in the yard either, but I am buying the good parts and doing all my own work.
