My ultimate transmission would be a Turbo 400 with a Switch Pitch and a lock up, shifted with a Hurst Autostick I.
I don't remember if that bang from shifting into reverse from drive is still there with the switch pitch. I drove cars with the Switch Pitch and all I remember was the fantastic torque and how they threw you back into the seats during pull out..
I'll have to experiment. The bang could come from a few different things...like removing wave steel plates in the clutch packs, the valve body and line pressure calibration, etc. But I'm really happy with the SP converter I have in my Chevy II right now, it gets stock stall speed in "low", and about 3000 in "high", and it is really loose below that 3000, so no creep at all. It's a ST300 converter (B1 Daaco number), which is a bit smaller than the 400 converter (B2), it's the same size as a normal stock TH350 converter (B1A).
Mine has also been modified, the stock "high" stall speed with those converters is usually 2000-2500, depending on several factors. Not sure what you mean by "too small", it's a stock size converter, and the switching factor makes it act like the "size" it is switched to.
