Also, I came across this. It is the original sketch I did of my "Santa's Hot Rod" greeting card.
I did it back on 2006, not long after joining the HAMB and while working on storyboards for
"The Simpsons Movie"... ( along with my take on a "CARS" inspired hot rod, aptly named, "Rod"

    Hello,

When we were teenagers, we went to Lions Dragstrip almost every weekend. First it was spectating, then racing the 58 Impala and finally, racing the 1940 Willys 671 C/Gas Coupe. It was exciting for a teenager to be in the middle of something that showed others what my brother and I were capable of doing to a hot rod of any kind.

It was a time period that a lot of racers developed many unusual race cars that were capable of daily driving. The street legal Gas Coupes And Sedans were originally set up for this purpose. The Lions management wanted to get the hot rod guys to get off of the street for racing at the track. They made it easy as there were classes set up just for everyday street legal classes, with a few modifications to the hot rod.

On one weekend in 1959, there was a bright yellow 56 Ford pick up truck rolling into the Lions Dragstrip entrance. Instead of going to the spectator’s side, the yellow pickup drove to the Lions Competitor’s Pits Area. Now, that was something. Maybe it was a push truck for one of the FED race cars. Little did we know, until we did a thorough walk around, that it was not a spectator, nor was it a push truck. It was a street legal truck, with miles of daily driving as the owner was a house painter in Los Angeles.

That gave everyone a chuckle. How can a street legal truck be competitive in the classes? A truck? But, the surprise was on everyone, including two teenage brothers. When he idled up to his pit area spot, people were already walking over for a better look. There were ladders on top of the rack, paint cans in the back and other supplies piled up in the bed of the truck. That was all being emptied. The truck sat quietly. Then the crew opened the hood and everyone was aghast! 671 supercharged Chrysler Hemi motor was sitting in the compartment, yikes!

The opened hood created a very impressive motor and after changing spark plugs and other things for the class, (opening the headers, etc.) the motor was fired up. What a great sound that motor made. Now, every one dashed to the staging area to get a ringside seat for the run by this street driven 671 Chrysler motor truck. It was awe inspiring and instantly, we liked that So Cal street legal truck. Owner, Charlie Ettien was a favorite every weekend at Lions and other So Cal dragstrips.

When we started building our 1940 Willys Coupe for B/Gas and C/Gas, we knew sometime down the line, that we would face off with this fast, yellow, Ford F100 street driven truck. Not only the likes of Doug Cook, Jr. Thompson, K.S. Pittman, now this speedy, powerful truck was also included in competition cars waiting to race. Great!

Last one in the "Dave" series. Unless he runs into some more. All three that I have posted, the Comet, Willys truck [in previous F.A.S.] and now this dragster were drawn in the early to mid 60's by my best drag race, mini bike, brother from another mother, shop pest, and buddy Dave! Have a nice weekend all.

I have a couple of notebooks full of drawings like Dave's and from about the same time period. Always had time for another one, it seems like I never have time Now.
