Hot Rods THE INDUCTION THREAD

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mad mikey, Dec 9, 2016.

  1. Art Chrisman, in the car, built his own version of a front mounted blower. He used up draft carbs mounted under the blower. He ran this set up for a while, but performance was lacking, and it required going under the car to adjust the carbs. He soon abandoned this set up and went to a standard top mounted blower.

Watched Chrisman race John Bradley at Riverside, I think in 58, where he backfired the blower
duct launching the top body panel in a showy display and loosing to Bradley's flathead......"amazing flathead". As I recall this was one of Bradley's milder engine evolutions w/ just 4 carbs and a bit of nitro.

Saw this at Speed Week in 2018. Still can’t figure out the path of the induction air, but it’s interesting.

Sort of leaves you with a WTF feeling. It would be interesting to know what the engine came from.

I took this photo at the HCP in 06. Don't know anything about it or the car just different set up.

    Check out the scoop cover!
What are the finned plates on the cowl?
Think he was trying to hide the fact that it's a Rally Sport Camaro?

I hope he was prudent with a screen either on the blower or the scoop, that hand whittled scoop cover is real cool!
Those finned aluminum pieces do resemble the 67 Camaro and 68-72 Nova SS hood louvers, looks like they were either shortened or he cut one in half.

Here's a pic of the car. Taken at first NHRA Reunion at New England Dragway, but I think it's a west coast car.

I thought I was an expert on British stuff, till I ran across this! Downdraft (or, as the Brits would say, downdraught) SU carburetors!

    20200125_065015.jpg

Edit - just noticed the name on the valve cover; SU is the abbreviation of Skinner Union

Copied this from FB, seems like a lot of work considering you could probably shoehorn in an SBC, but still pretty cool.

"How about this wild Crosley V8 powered road race car built by rodder Whitey Thuesen in the early ’50s. Starting with two stock 4-cylinder Crosley blocks Whitey whittled out a crankcase from mild steel and bolted them to it then proceded to make his own crankshaft out of a chunk of 4340. Feeding the V8 are four floatless Amal carbs, two to a side. First time out at Willow Springs it came home third driven by Whitey. For details on the unique ride see the September ’54 issue of Car Craft. Whitey started building and racing Midgets in the early ‘30s in the Los Angeles area."

The small-block Chevy in the Master's Dragliner was fitted with four two-barrel carburetors. It used an aftermarket distributor instead of a magneto. This required a battery, visible at lower left. Small details abound, such as the water temperature gauge on the side of the cowling, just outboard of the battery, which can be read from the outside.
