For sure the Hartford Autorama was a must event when I was 12-13 years old. Even got my non car interested father to take me. After the first one he really began to enjoy himself every year after that.

Even went one year when it was near blizzard conditions I was worried that he would turn for home anytime. Was the most enjoyable time, not the normal huge crowds so I could see without looking past all the other people. :)

Yes, Leroy said it is Doug Hays on the dragster. I like pulling race cars with hot rods! The closest I came was pulling '40 Fords home with my '38 Coups. One woody and one sedan delivery, Should have kept them all. :(

  5. Thanks for cleaning up the photo.....

Kind of strange back story on that car......a schoolmate bought it new from a local dealer......283/4-bbl, , dual exhaust, 3-speed on the column. He also had the dealer install a SUN tach (red football). He drove it a couple of years, but hung himself after his girlfriend jilted him.....sad story. His Mom put the car away for 2-1/2 years and finally decided to sell it. When I got it in '64 (like new condition) I drove it as-is. But then I got an over-the-counter 327/365 HP complete motor, had a BW/CR T-10 , big Corvette exhaust manifolds, 4.11 Posi on hand, so I put the car together. Also installed "police special" brakes, springs, etc. and drove it through college. Finally sold it after losing a battle with a '67 GTO.....a guy who had more money than brains! But he could drive it......and wash it daily....Oh well..... The kid who bought it from me just got his driver permit (Daddy bought it for his 16th birthday)......hit a utility pole one week later, put the engine in the front seat........

    ^^ Boy, that's a double sad tale. I won't say everyone's got a story that's similar but
many of us do. We have an affair with a certain car, part with it and either know it's
not going to get the treatment we gave it or downright regret selling it to that particular
guy. Just to make matters worse, we can no longer open the Friday paper and pick up
    something else cheaply.

If every 3 window Duce looked like that it would still be right.
In '62 or '63 I had a '40 sedan delivery for a short time. It was light gray with black fenders, old paint. We cruised Walnut Creek, CA every weekend, Main Street, Mel's to the Walnut Bowl. One Saturday my friend and I used tempura paint and painted a big star on each door with "Creek Town Fuzz" around it. On the body we painted Paddy Wagon. Well, that night after being pulled over about half a dozen times for safety checks, searches (both us and the car) and some not so subtle threats we went to a gas station and washed it off. That was probably one of the most legal cars I've ever owned and I got no tickets but they just kept trying. The Creek Town Fuzz was not amused.:D

The real Mc Mullen car is pretty easily to identify as is has some rather large crude looking radius rod brackets.

Finally someone speaks out...when I run across that article I thought something was off ...everthing else had it as the Orange Krate and then there it was with no mention of Orange Krate instead they had Northern Star, I figured eventually someone would have a answer, then I just run across this article and I assume that is the Northern Star ...but there is no mention of that.
Seems to me years back when I was with Foss in the Columbia we assisted a ship called Northern Star or possibly a fishing boat when we took a barge up to Bremerton and passed through the Ballard locks..
    Anyways Thanks.. 20200123_142252.jpeg

Ya I checked both cars ...close but not there...
I was going to see about finding some kind of a time line on both cars build dates mainly the paint jobs ...not saying somebody copied the other, but the flame jobs are close enough to each other that someone saw the other one before they flamed there's or same person flamed both cars..just seemed odd to have two car that close in appearance and the words clone, tribute or any of the other tags they use now days didn't come into play.

Yep, 34 Larry is right about the Orange Krate. Car was known as "OLDSMOBILITY" at that time. A previous owner commented on this mistake by Hot Rod Magazine. Thanks 34Larry! 100_6275.JPG

I Believe he was Referring it to The Great White North Eh!!...:D The Brightest Hotrod in the North with Trophies and Road Warrior Lineage...Probably Trains and Planes called that too...

The Contents are correct to Title and the Article doesn't mention it as if it is its Southern Friend...;)

It is interesting it's second name Orange Crate coincidentally connected as alluded to Its Southern Friend oK...

Loudbang I found this article in a May 1992 Street Rodder magazine.
You had posted a picture earlier of a flamed 32 Roadster, that was owned by Tom McMullens, and mentioned it possibly being owned by a female and confused...
Well this article should bring it all together, the history of the car at least to May 1992, and yes it was owned by a lady at that time anyways.
And sadly it didn't have some of it's features that made the car what it was always remembered as.
Where is it now? Does the lady still own it? 20200127_012547.jpeg 20200127_012623.jpeg 20200127_012718.jpeg 20200127_012812.jpeg 20200127_012836.jpeg

Good stuff would loved to have seen it with the Ford 427. And Roth did the flames.

The lady I was thinking of drove it in a couple photos when it was flamed version. I have posted a couple of them but can't think of a way to search for them on here.

I went back through the November 1958 Hot Rod magazine that I got the article where it was titled as Northern Star.
I also found that the actual Northern Star was featured in the same magazine under the title Evergreen Eyefull.
Also there is no mention of the car being named Northern Star other than the sign board located next to the rear tire.
So most likely it was not necessarily a intentional mistake, if thats possible ? , more of just giving each article a title that went along with the car and owners origin.
Not that any of this really makes a difference and it was probably more of a waste of time ...but it's history and I was bored.
Also if the pics look a little blurry , sorry I didn't know if it was my tired eye's or the camera.

It's really interesting though seeing both cars in the same magazine.
