Will a aftermarket head for a Pontiac 389 work on the 195 Pontiac? Any mods needed? I'm looking at the Edelbrock head with a 74 cc chamber. I'd like to make a street/strip engine out of my 195.
They will bolt on, but the valve Angeles are different from a 389 to a 400 (most if not all aftermarket heads will be a 400) you would have to cut the pistons to match.
I once installed a set of 400 heads and intake on a 64 389 engine. And the only mod needed was to use two gaskets on the 389 valve covers. the valves didn't hit the pistons. I don't think the valve angles are different.
I was going on memory from years ago, I could be wrong. I was thinking the hot set was to bore a 389 30 or 60 over and use stock 400 pistons and 400 heads. Like I said I could be wrong
If your interested in a new head I can help you. I bought 2 different new heads . Edlebrock CNC chamber 72 cc. and 87cc. These heads are new They are display heads off Edelbrock truck. They will need hardware. $700 each +sh.
