Most holes are sexy, tell it makes things weak. Always like well done holes in race cars an hot rods. The best part of holes was that I could make it racy lite an sexy at same time with just my time,no $$$. So did drill my hot rod an race cars as I thought they needed.

My little show sign is kind of coving the drilled brake backing plates with home made scoops, but the homemade sign stand is also drilled to match.

Engineers , such as Carroll Smith who designed & built road racing sport cars,do not use lightening holes. They feel properly designed components ( weight vs strength) do not need them. I don't believe hi tech aircraft nor space capsules use them. Carrol S. authored the great books Engineer To Win & Prepar To Win Grag

I've had both those books for years, excellent reference material.

  9. Absolutely true, designing it correctly in the first place is the best way to go. But the heart of hot rodding is based on pre-war cars built before exotic materials, that were overbuilt to survive on mainly unpaved rural roads, at speeds of 10s of mph. After the war Detroit emphasized monster cars with LOTS of chrome (nothing wrong with that!). Guys remembered from high school science class that a = F/m . Oldsmobile with their Rocket followed closely by Chrysler with their FirePower took care of F, the guys had to dump as much m as possible to maximize a, thus holes, fiberglass, plexiglass, mags, acid dipping, etc., etc., etc..

And, as I always say, name one thing in hot rodding that is practical!!

Even with the holes in this frame that thing has to be heavier than hell...is it even real?
And some guys can't figure out why RR's are looked down at as hot rods... 15797401479688035026625745982543.jpeg

Less for lightening, more for venting, but there are more to come on this build and my pickup. Threads like this are inspirational and I have aircraft punches.

Loving the (presumably unintended) irony - Weight bar styled bumper, and lightening holes :)

    Looks good too!

There reaches a point where too many holes really look ugly and
    introduce safety issues.

Definitely not hot rods...Art? I guess a form of Confused Unstructured mixed medium Abstract Art...maybe.
I bet that chain frame could be pretty wild ride if you didn't get all them links welded together good...

I think it's funny that guys cut lightening holes in their frames and then strengthen the void by welding in a chunk of tubing which will weigh a lot more than what they removed! LOL
