Ken Miles with the prototype big block Cobra at Riverside in October of 1964. This one had a 390 motor.

^^ In 1974 I had saved up enough dough to go looking for a Corvette. I'd had my '63
a couple of years earlier and needed another. I found my very righteous '69 roadster
and drove it to work the following Monday. The same day, one of the engineers brought
the Cobra he picked up over the weekend, similar looking to the one above but certainly
not a competition model. We had a ton of people around our cars. I'd paid $3500 for
mine, he'd paid $5000 for his and it was a little worse for wear...not bad, just tired. I
thought to myself I came out the winner. Guess how I feel now.

IMG_0414edit.jpg Don't have a MG T-type body to base your drag car on? Build your won! Photo taken at Hobbs, N.M. circa 1961-62

My wife accuses me and my brother-in-law of living in the past. Is that such a bad thing?
Yes, when it makes me want to cry!

Chaparral 2F with top cut off raced by a Canadian group of Hungarians. Called it a Chinook.

It looks to me like the Chinook is just a home built with a 2E or 2G inspired body. The 2F had one of the original fiberglass Chaparral 2 tubs with extensions to widen it. I saw the 2F at the Monterey Historics in the late 1980s. The door was propped open and you could see the brown fiberglass tub with white extensions about 6 inches wide bonded to it.

The Fejers cloned Chaparral 2 and 2F bodies. Some were built on McLaren tubs. Think the one I pictured is a Chinook Mk5. There was that weird Cox slot-car sponsorship deal. When you already own an oil company...
2G copy would have square sponsons and wider rear fender extensions from when Can-Am became a race to see who could run the widest tires.

A Bill Brannon photo from Sebring in 1963. To quote from the copyright owner: No. 16 Shelby American Cobra in the paddock with Phil Hill sitting in the car. Carroll Shelby is on the left in the dark shirt facing away from the camera. Ken Miles and Lew Spencer actually drove this car during the race, and when it retired they joined Hill in the No. 12 and won their GT class. Hill also drove with Dan Gurney in the No. 15 during the race!
