Pan lids better than that old Ford wheel cover. That valve cover looks goofy. As far as brake drums as air cleaners maybe I'll use a stock '32 Ford one as they would breathe really well!

The pie pans look neat, but I suspect a cfd model of the air flow capability at full throttle wouldn’t look very nice.

I guess its still better than trying to use an Air Cleaner as a Brake Drum!

  8. Just ordered an 11" polished stainless cake pan for $7.98 and a 9" filter element. (Already had a base. ) I like the covered air filter look, and probably most folks won't know the difference.
I will post a picture when it's installed...

Hot rodding is ingenuity. I applaud some thinking out of the box. I can’t understand using a Cad/Olds fiberglass replica when there so many better things out there. I also made a dual quad one out of a stainless snap on Moon style disc but didn’t use it. Guess I need to post it.
I could put holes in my pan lids but I’m not; as as for flow a small base Carter WCFB might be 375 cfm.

Just because you can don't mean that you should. I think that I have seen several air cleaners on this thread that fall into that category.
Not to hijack the thread but way back in the day I had a '57 Lincoln and the wing nut on the air cleaner cover had three wings. It looked like a standard stamped wing nut but had three wings. I have not seen one since and would like to have one to put on my "trophy wall". Anybody remember seeing them? More to the point where could I get one?

  12. I like the brake drum cover. But then, I never have followed the crowd walking in lockstep like a bunch of baby ducks. I've always admired repurposing for the very reason that it doesn't follow the crowd.
As far as the imagined weight issue, the drum is no heavier than half the styles sold by Obrien Truckers, so that's moot.

Here are some more possibilities for brake drum filter covers............

  13. I don't like the looks of the exposed filter element on the standard air cleaner. The full cover style are expensive and I am not a fan of the louvers.
The full cost of my "pan" cleaner will be around $20.
If you want to use a brake drum for an air cleaner, go for it.
I'll bet it brings a lot of attention. I know that I would stop to look at it at a show...

I got a kick out of that air cleaner but to be honest I guess that's being different and where trends start. It reminds me of a guy who used to show up at the restaurant we used to hang at and had an upside down metal paint roller tray for a hood scoop. I must have walked past it a hundred times before I realised what it was.

If you had those brake drums lying around you really should use them as brake drums......

All right, time to get serious.
The brake drum as an air cleaner, regardless of how much lipstick is used, this is still a pig, but that is just my opinion.

Now in the arena of utensils from the kitchen or the kennel, here is a small selection of stainless steel dog watering bowls found on the web if you just punch in the words " images of stainless steel dog bowls ". There are hundreds of different styles to choose from.

There, I have done a modicum of research for those that insist on being different, but with style, and ease of operation, and consideration for the wallet.

So you are now armed and dangerous, go forth and sin no more in the realm of what can and what shouldn't be used as a novelty " air cleaner "

Personally, I really like it! I'm going to re-purpose a worn out Buick drum I have to replace my present set-up. If anyone's looking for a chrome plated louvered mail box, give me a call.

[IMG]interesting maybe if it could be cast from aluminium and then machined it would work.

I think I'd rather have a sister in a Whorehouse than have that ugly piece of shit staring at me every time I opened my hood! JMO

Great minds think alike! I've been making a similar air cleaner, for my inline four. Since the carb is an old side-draft Weber, I thought it would be more appropriate (but maybe OT) to use a vintage Ferrari drum, which I found on Ebay. I've been trying to come up with some way to make the knock-off rotate when the car is under way; if you have any ideas, let me know.
