I wonder if Van Halen was a fan of 37’s too? An awful lot of similarities between their logo & my 37’s logo....

A couple years ago while hunting in Montana with a buddy on their family farm, we found his grandfather’s 37 Plymouth tailgate. After scoring that I could have cared less about deer!

Come to think of it the only thing I shot that day were photos of old cars.... Now that is a good day of hunting!

Those are the standard '37 Studebaker tail light - clean examples are worth a pretty penny and they sell quickly on that auction site.

I've got a little over 1,000 miles on it now and it is doing pretty well. Sticky brake light and clutch neutral safety switches need more adjustment and the glove box door won't stay closed. Small stuff.

    upload_2019-10-17_4-6-16.png Thanks, Mike Cook...

    Hello,

For my brother and me, our introduction to one of the fastest gas coupes at Lions in 1957-60 was the Tahitian Red 1937 Chevy Coupe owned by So Cal favorite, Doug Cook. He made his name and notoriety by being an expert mechanic, outstanding quick driver and all around knowledgeable hot rodder.
    upload_2019-10-17_4-7-47.png
That Chevy Coupe was actually painted the ever popular Tahitian Red from that time period. This 1937 Chevy was owned by Doug Cook and was one of the fastest in C/Gas. It would have been one of our main competitors in that class, as our 671 SBC Willys Coupe was also in C/Gas. When we finished our first build of the 40 Willys, we had talked to Doug Cook in the pits at Lions Dragstrip to get some ideas and pointers.

We had looked over his 1937 Chevy Coupe and told ourselves that despite his total experience with drag racing/mechanics, his E.T. and speeds were not unreachable. So, we looked at the future competition as a huge challenge. Of course, our initial times and speeds were nothing to talk about, so we knew we needed more power.

During this time period of 57-60, Doug Cook’s 1937 Chevy was almost unbeatable in C/Gas. But it was the idea that a fast, street legal car could be a winner in a class at Lions. His cars always looked very cool and could just be set up to cruise around after the Saturday drags at Lions Dragstrip. That was a real dual purpose car. It was our goal to do the same.

Note: by the time we had gone into our 2nd rebuild of our 40 Willys, added a 671, larger 292 SBC, had all of the supercharged coordinated parts, some head work, and extra trunk weight, we were ready for the C/Gas class. But, by then, Doug Cook had moved on with the same idea into the very competitive B/Gas class.

"Look at the variety of cars racing from 55-60. Doug Cook's 37 Chevy and Charlie Ettien’s Hemi Ford Truck cars in the Gas Coupes and Sedan Classes. A 52 Chevy/Olds sedan and a lowered 50 Chevy sedan in the various stock or lower Gas Coupes and Sedan classes. It was just go racing… then, drive home with a trophy…after having lots of fun."

This is what the street legal gas coupe looked like, underneath…mufflers, tailpipes, license plate and whitewall tires. A "Jnaki" weekly event in the 58 Impala, and in our 1940 Willys Coupe.

    Hello,

This 4 door 1937 Chevy sedan was an exact look and copy of my brother’s friend’s car. It was a great running sedan and not much was done to it to make it go faster or look like a custom car. We are talking teenagers growing up in 1957-60 in So Cal. Jobs and money were two things most needed to buy a car, let alone have gas money and extras for the weekend activities. Most could not have either unless you had a $$$$$ pipeline coming into your pockets weekly. So, black rims, small hubcaps and a nice interior made it a nice local cruiser.

Besides being completely stock, that Chevy sedan was rather cool and reliable. I was able to get a ride in it several times. Driving in the sedan reminded me of being in a gangster movie, that was popular in those time periods of B/W small screen TV programming. For 1950s cruising, this 37 Chevy just fit the bill with the popularity of Elliot Ness and the gangster movies of the time period. Just put on a Dobbs Fedora hat, lower it over the eyebrows and instant 1937 Chevy cruising style. My brother and his friend had the fedora hats on for teenage Halloween parties and cruises looking like gangsters of the 1930s-40s.

    upload_2020-1-13_4-57-31.png Rruss film, screen capture.
Here is a photo of my dad (lower right) wearing one of his many Dobbs hats so popular with his generation. We told our dad that an airplane motor powered race car was coming to Lions Dragstrip. So, he had to see that. Plus, he bought us all lunch of hot dogs and Cokes. He liked all sorts of drag racing and supported us in our excitement. He also loaned us his movie camera to record all of the events during the 1958-60 seasons. The 1937 Chevy Sedan? Parked in the spectator's side parking lot in all its faded black glory.

Hats? We never wore any hats because our mom told us that it makes the hair fall out, due to not breathing or being exposed to the air, daily. It is probably true and false… Our dad always had the nicest straight across hairline until his radiation treatment. My brother and I never wore any hats (except for baseball hats for short period of time) and we always had/have our hair. So, gee, maybe our mom had something that came true in her 50’s old wives tale booklet. She could never explain why our dad always had his nice straight across hairline, despite the daily wearing of his Dobbs Hat collection.

Those Dobbs hats and the one still in its box for safe keeping sparked the memories of that 1937 Chevy black sedan that used to be at our house in the 1957-63 era. My brother and his friend had countless hours of fun cruising around in that old car. A fast hot rod it was not, but the cruising was still top notch. My dad’s last Dobbs hat has survived over 50 years of use by 20 something costumes for Halloween, countless hours by our toddler son, and to add to the timeline, our granddaughter wore the hat during a costume dance in our house.

    Rusty,

I REALLY wanted to buy your coupe when you had it for sale a couple years ago but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.
