Here I am back for more education. What is the difference between a 350 and 305 distributor? A friend gave me a distributor from a 350, I was going to install it today and the drive gear was too big to go through the hole in the block. I thought they were interchangeable???
    Thanks
    Scott

The same distributor should fit in either a 305 or a 350. I'm not sure if you even have a Chevy distributor.

yup, the only v8 chev distributors that are different are 348 and 409.... even a big block 396 - 454 distributors will fit a small block

It is not a long shaft distributor, it looks more like a Pontiac to me.

46 Poncho, are you sure it was the gear stopping it? There are big block distributors that are longer which were used on the 366+427 truck tall deck engines. They look like other distributors but are about 1/4 inch longer.

Yep, gear would not fit. It is a very short distributor like a Pontiac. I was going on what I was told, that it was a 350

Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile each made their own version of the 350 engine, and they're all different from the Chevy.

But without pics, we can only make wild guesses.

  10. Sounds like you got a Pontiac 350 Distributor.

With two pigtails it wasn't going to work in any small block we talk about here.

  16. It's an Olds distributor...Similar looking to a Pontiac but notice the O-ring that Olds used.
