I have been negligent in getting in my 28 roadster in that I have been using the steering wheel to drag myself in. This resulted in stress causing the tank to start to seep at the column drop. Not a real leak but just enough to make me realize something needed to be done. I thought about the 31 column drops but I hated to ruin the looks of the original dash. I was also in the process of upgrading to a 12 volt system to run a high torque starter so I needed to do a 6 to 12 volt conversion as well. I started out by bending a 1/4 x 2" flat bar that runs from the driver side cowl to the passenger cowl. The bar is bolted on both sides as well as to the bottom of the instrument tunnel. Then a 36 column drop with the toggle and key was mounted to the new crossmember bar. Now there is no pressure on the tank and I have yet to even see a sign of seepage once the strain is off the column support. The crossmember gave me a place to add gauges as well as a switch panel for the lights and accessory switches. A new starter button was replaces the original key. The bar is far enough under the tank that it is very hard to see unless you get low enough to see the bottom of the tank.
Do you have a overdrive ?? If not what is the toggle switch on the shifter for? Nice job on the column Drop!!!
Thanks, Overdrive is an F150 transmission. Switch is for turn indicators. Bulbs hidden in headlights.
