33Doll, all kool pics but the first is outstanding. This is the way I remember
a good amount of hot rods looking. The younger guys promoting the barn
find-rat rod-patina'd look are missing the boat. '60 rods weren't junk with
more junk attached. They may have needed work but they weren't made to look
like they needed work. I'll say it until I die, I screwed up by not having at least
an old Instamatic camera with me as a kid.

I should say that all of the "beaters" we see at shows and nostalgic
drag meets are definitely not junk. No doubt many are wisely and
well put together. I guess I've gotten past the crap-is-cool thing.

That takes me back, thanks. We built them while we drove them. Most of them never reached a finished state. The parking lot and streets around the Oakland Roadster show were filled with that stuff and it could take an hour or so just ti get to the show. A regular guy could own a '40 or two.

Stogy, this is the Orange Krate from Vancouver and Victoria B.C. and yes it was street legal. Car got sold to somebody in Vancouver 30 or 40 years ago. I hope it's still around somewhere but nobody around here seems to know where it is. orange crate 1.JPG orange crate 4.JPG

Do you know what show that is in the bottom picture? Early Oakland Roadster Show? I see the big trophy (9') that was always displayed. Himsl's Moonshiner and lots of other cars I've seen together in shows in the late 50s to early 60s. The Moonshiner is pre- metal flake of mid to late 60's. It also appears pre the ridiculous later "Show car" insanity.

@Austinrod's Hotrod is in that pic he may have a pretty good handle on exactly what show that was...1957 or 58 perhaps.

Loudbang, that group photo reminds me of the Early Times photos in Rod & Custom. That era in general and ET in particular were a big influence on me.

There was a very nice '32 Plymouth roadster on our farm in Texas when I was a kid. I played in it and as I grew older and My big brother was into hot rods I thought of "fixing it up". One day I came home from school to find that Dad had cut it up for scrap along with a '41 Dodge and tons of old farm equipment. Times were tough and he had to make a buck however he could. He bought me a $35 Cushman and I was good.:)

It was featured in RnC around '55-'56. Appeared just like that pic.

It is many times interesting how little difference there is or I suppose periods overlapping other periods in many cases...but I suspect drivetrains and GO Fast equipment was flying off and on as advanced and innovation continued...

All of those back to brass over the top T buckets are just not my thing. I really don't know what it is. Some are really well built. I think it's that so many were just full size model kits that you could buy and put together,
