History Detroit Autorama is just around the corner

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by lothiandon1940, Jan 10, 2020.

  1. Post up your favorite memories, stories and photos from the Autorama, especially basement stuff and anything related to the Alexander Brothers and their builds. Keep it traditional guys, none of that BIG wheel, SKINNY tire shit....Thanks for the responses and consideration..........:)..Don.

  2. How about this shot of arguably the most beautiful '60 Starliner ever, a clone of the Adonis, built by the Alexander Brothers. Built by John Schleicher. Adonis-Custom-1960-Ford-Starliner-5.jpg

The basement trophies are the most creative.

My outlaw clone in 2006. Roth was the featured builder

Oh geez...Where to start? I took my T Bucket in '06. Had way too much fun. My at the time club, The Nightmares, had a HUGE display in the basement. I haven't been in years. I'm just not the ppl person I used to be.

The first Autorama I went to was in 1968. I was an eighth grader in an after school model car club. It cost us 2.50 for the ticket and a bus ride to and from the event. I have only missed two since.

  10. .....Thanks, Mark. I rushed to judgement.:)...I'll fix it......Don.

Just what I was thinking, Don. I like 1960 Fords, I wish Ford had continued that design theme.

Way too many great memories of the Detroit Autorama, my favorite show of the year, to put here. Trapping a squirrel in Denise's kitchen, endless amounts of delicious beer and BBQ from Slow's, accidentally taking my friends to urban club and then getting a gun pulled on me, finding a razor blade and crackpipe in my hotel toilet, getting hopelessly lost in the Renaissance Center, having breakfast with Chip Foose... there's honestly way too many memories to talk about and after 12 consecutive years of going, it's really more about catching up with the friends I get to see than the cars themselves.

I mean, Mike Alexander choosing my car for the last A Bros Award that was actually picked by Mike or Larry will remain a highlight. Funny story about that. We were just a bunch of shmucks that built this car and had no intentions of actually competing for an award, nor did we feel like we were worthy. So that night we went to the bar. We're all half in the bag, and Scott (Lucky77) calls me. I pick up. Scott: "Where are you guys?" Me: "We're at the bar." Scott: "You just won the A Bros award, Mike Alexander is looking for you and you idiots are at the bar?!" It was a complete shock. Luckily we were able to catch up with Mike the next day and express our thanks. He said it was how he would have built the car himself, which will be the greatest compliment anyone could ever pay me or the car.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this year.

57Joe, that's really cool. I got to be friends with Larry and I cherish those memories. Larry liked to build model cars, and I have his old glass display case.

Great photos and great stories. I have never been and will probably never get to go but I have always looked forward to magazine and now internet coverage of the show for the past 61 years since I was a car crazy 12 year old.

As you can see its been 4 years since we have attended. This year 6 of us are coming by Amtrak from NW Indiana . We will be in the basement for the most part of all 3 days.

  20. Jim, like that Miller racer.
Hope you guys have a great time at Autorama.
