Wish I would have captured all the details of his ‘54 Ford, circa early to mid 60’s
Chopped 3.5”, 312 dual 4’s, fully decked, rolled and smoothed, full roll n pleats interior
This was the Custom scene in Orlando, back then. Apparently quite thick with top notch Customs. [IMG]

After finishing the second version of his ’50 Chevy custom, the late Larry Watson loaded girlfriend Elaine Sterling and her gold-lamé bathing suit into the purple two-door and met Eric Rickman for a photo shoot at the Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Cemetery administration building.

Besides radically lowering the car (remember, there were no hydraulics or airbags yet), Larry removed GM’s emblems and door handles, then installed ’56 Buick side trim, full-length lakes pipes, ’56 Olds headlights, and a molded ’53 Chevy grille shell and splash pan.

He also squeezed 14 extra teeth onto the ’53 grille bar and frenched ’54 Mercury taillights into the rear fenders. Watson was doing striping and scalloping, but not yet painting complete cars, so Long Beach Renegades club member Damon Richey sprayed the custom-mixed purple-and-lavender metallic that inspired the Chevy’s nickname: Grapevine. A color image from this session made the Sept. ’57 HRM cover, artfully illustrating the blurb, “Lower Your Car The Right Way.”

I love that Watson actually drove his cars this low.
I have on two occasions actually raised cars which I had previously lowered too much for practical driving ('59 El Camino and '64 Riviera).
Lore has it that Watson had his driving privileges suspended "for life" for driving cars that were "too low"! Talk about 'Performance Art!"

It uses Chevy parts somewhere, top, middle? rear? maybe just the motor. It was kool to see in Salina at the KKOA Spectacular.

I received this verification in a PM from @Roger O'Dell.
"Its not a legend, he had the dmv letter in a picture frame in his garage , his son must have it now."
Roger went on to say. "The Bellflower cops were always trying to catch him. Once he had a friend that resembled him driving Larry’s Chevy get arrested for driving with fake license. Took Larry to,go to the Lakewood jail to get him out. Another time Larry was leaving a liquor store and noticed a cop, he backed into the store and called a tow company to pick up his car, cops were pissed. And on and on"
    Thanks, Roger.
