Finally getting rid of the old huck drums and installing a disc brake kit on my ‘50 Fleetline, I couldn’t help but notice this mark on the spindle. What do you guys think? Replace or is this spindle ok to use? Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
The threads concern me more then the nic. how did it come apart? Can you put it back together? Did this come off driving car? if the hub but tightens up I would run it.
I agree with the above...and would run it. It is a pretty easy repair if you have access to a welder though. I certainly woudln't throw it away.
If the bearing has spun on the spindle you will most likely know when you do up the spindle nut and cant get the last little bit of play out before the bearing locks up. Equals worn spindle. We had this happen on a 32 , the PO must have had it spin.
Yep, it came apart fine, I drove the car all last summer with no bearing noises, I’m able to tighten the spindle but without any issues, so I don’t think I’d have an issue with putting it back together. Thank you for the reply Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I think that is a bearing conversion. IIRC, Chevys up thru about 1960 had ball bearings, not tapered roller bearings. Perhaps the OE bearing is the one that failed, leaving the divot on the spindle. In any case, it looks like it would work 'OK', if you think just 'OK' is good enough. As mentioned above, the threads are less than ideal. Ray
Bin it and get a new one. Even if the bearing land was good the threads are knackered. Is it worth risking other peoples lives and your own for a few dollars
If you’re worried about the threads,,,,,use a new nut . Some wear there yes,,,,but very usable . Tommy
Unfortunately I scrapped a complete front suspension from my avatar. The city got on to me and I couldn't give it away locally. Fortunately there is a junkyard close by that has several should I have a need.
Always a bummer to put in a situation to have to scrap old car parts. Very cool that you have a local source for parts, really wish I could find a junk yard that had old Chevy parts locally! Btw the car in your avatar pic is awesome! Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I cleaned the threads up and they didn’t seem too bad, got it back together with the new bearings and rotor just fine. Thanks for the reply
Thank you everyone for the reply’s. Really appreciate the help! got everything back together with new bearings /rotor and new spindle nut as well. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Hey Pete I really appreciate all comments when I ask for suggestions on here, I really do. As for yours, I take it your suggestion is replacing the spindle, which I may just do. I can tell you comments are a lot more helpful without smart ass remarks. Thanks for being that guy though Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
With modern people, it usually takes "smart ass" to get their attention. I will buy you a beer sometime.
Hnstray is right........at least up to 54 Chevs had ball bearing front hubs and that groove I'd bet was made by a collapsed or worn ball bearing.......the tapered roller should be fine as it spreads the load.........tho' the stub axle threads do indeed look a bit iffy.......lol...... andyd
This may be a bit too late now as you may have already made your mind up I seriously suggest you replace the spindle. I was driving a car when the spindle snapped ended up driving down the road on my front drivers stub axle and fender trying to keep the car in a straight line as there were other cars around me as in early morning rush hour traffic. I was damn lucky the stub axle didn't dig into the ground who knows what would've happened then. Post mortem afterwards when surveying the damage it was discovered a slight groove in the snout may have led to a hairline crack developing then under constant vibration the snout let loose. For the sake of a couple of hundred bucks verses the very real potential to lose your car and maybe take someone else out isn't worth it.
