I had a 2020 epiphany...it hit me like a blinding flash of light...there’re only TWO types of Hot Rods!

    I submit:
    1). RODS GOIN RIGHT...

  6. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Something fairly new, just 'delivered' to the client I drew it for.

Made this commission panel for a customer. We all owe or freedom to do what we love to those who have sacrificed so much for us.

    Hello,

One of the most unusual dragsters we saw at Lions Dragstrip from our time there 1957-60, was a little rear engine race car. We knew who it was, as it happened to be at our favorite transmission shop in Northeast Bixby Knolls almost weekly. (We called it Northeast Bixby Knolls, but it was the Northeast Long Beach industrial area North of Del Amo Blvd)

Everyone we knew that had some transmission work done on their hot rods and cruisers went to Stu’s Transmission Shop on Cherry Avenue. It was a stones throw North of the famed Cherry Avenue Drags, just a block or two away, from the cemeteries.

This whole row of shops on Cherry Avenue in this portion of Long Beach had some of the best builder/repair guys in the whole industrial area. Henry’s Machine Shop, Jocko’s, a chrome/speed/ parts shop, a great muffler/header shop, a tire and alignment shop, and the standard auto parts places all along Cherry Avenue. They catered to most anyone, but had close ties to the hot rod/drag racers from Long Beach and Lakewood, a city border to the East.

When we saw the rear engine dragster in the Lions pits, the SBC motor did not fire up until they were ready. Everyone was intrigued by this odd looking creation. We all knew and saw the original Sidewinder from the Joe Mailliard Speed Shop so, this one was a little different. But, during those times, who wasn’t a little different?

This odd looking race car had an automatic transmission and when it finally made its trial run, we were all waiting for one speed or maybe some crisp shifting, but all everyone saw was a little silver body leave the starting line and make a smooth motor sound, transition to the next gear. It was an unusual experience to say the least.

We all wanted it to come back in the next week with a 671 supercharger and really make it go faster. But, after the initial days, little was seen of the silver bodied race car. I did take some odd angle films in early 1960 from the secret tower side position.

As cool as the different design was during this time, the original Sidewinder was making a hard time for everyone to win anything in the top eliminator dragster classes.

A digital illustration I was working on for Christmas but often the best laid plans of men and mice go awry and I did not finish it until Boxing Day. So I'll post it today...
