But, when Richard was asked recently if he missed racing, he said "A little, but what I really miss are the women."

Saw this one the other day, and I definitely like it! I don't think it's relating to vehicles, but I think it applies to alot of things :)

    Hello,
One summer in Bixby Knolls, I was hanging around with Gary Gabelich. He knew my brother and that group of teenagers. They went to the same high school during those late 1957-59 days. After our drag racing days were winding down, things were changing. For the old school group in the cruising scene at the local drive-in restaurant parking lots, as well as our new generation of arriving teenagers. We could see that the “old guard” was leaving and getting scarce. The new generation of hot rod/cruisers was arriving and filling up the spaces weekly with their versions of hot rods as well as stories.

We had met at the drive in, had some recollection of meeting at Lions Dragstrip in the pits. My brother was always impressed with the stuff that Gary Gabelich was doing. We were involved in racing the 58 Impala, Gary Gabelich was racing an Altered Coupe. (at age 17-18) We had finished building a 671 SBC Willys Coupe, he was racing dragsters. He was very skilled and what seemed like lightning quick reactions in any race car at Lions. "Fearless" was another impression he gave to most on lookers.

While we were hanging around that Summer, I showed him the 16mm color movies that I took of his Blue Crossley Altered at Lions Dragstrip and the 2nd annual Bakersfield Smokers March Meet. He was impressed. His classic comment was: “That’s cool…”

    Thanks, Gary...

My buddy had a problem one season getting past first round. He found every way possible to loose first round that year. When you asked him how he did...he just started saying " first round runner up".

  29. Not me, but I knew the guy: "I'm going to get higher performance out'ta this engine build. What color should I paint it?"
Crusty, old racer who'd been there and done it: "There's only one high-performance color, and that's black."

That is close to what an instructor stated to me in helicopter flight school. He said that anyone "could teach a monkey to fly an airplane." As I struggled to learn to hover I then asked him about monkeys ability to fly helicopters.

He stated that it "just takes a little smarter monkey."
