I recently picked up a new project...It has a flathead and I am trying to put a date to this engine...Any help on this code.. I can't seem to find it published 1953? Appears to be B S 3? Thanks in advance
I think those numbers near the deck are all production related. I can’t speak for all blocks,,,but the ones on my 49 8CM , are on the rear above the bell housing area . Right rear . Tommy Check on Van Pelts site,,they have a ton of casting numbers there. Good luck ,,,,welcome to the Flathead world,,,they are cool !
There are no casting or stamped numbers that can positively identify when a flathead was built. Just general year periods. Only a very few of the later blocks got the serial number stamped on them by the local dealer to comply with local registration regulations. Give us a good overall pic of the engine, then some closeup pics of any casting numbers you find on the top of the bellhousing area of the block.
I know this doesn't help any....Just some pics..This car was listed on the HAMB for sale,,, Currently doing a little work to it.,Wife had to have it! Much better car than the piece of crap I started with.
This decodes the date code on some later 49-53 flat head engines. http://myflatheadford.com/5988-2/#prettyPhoto
I agree with Aaron D. it is a 49-53. Where are you at in WV? I am in the Northern Panhandle, Marshall County.
Usually it’s a letter-number-letter date code. All do not have it, But if it’s correct it would be February 10, 1953. But it doesn’t match the normal stamping methods. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
