It was a steep learning curve.

Will be 53 come March - what a ride so far. Like most of us I never thought I'd make it even this far!
I'm the oldest in our car club, but at times probably act the youngest!

I'm 53 and considered fairly young in hot rodding groups. Most people I talk to about working on cars from the '40s and '50s are in their 70s because most guys younger than that never worked on such, especially OEM parts such as lever action shocks, straight 8s, and 216s. You older guys may want to mentor middle aged guys like me to pass along the knowledge!

I must say I'm very surprised those 65-ish youngsters are so well represented. I never would've thunk it. o_O

  9. I'm 74, will be 75 in April, recently diagnosed "cancer free" after a long series of radiation and shots, been playing with hot rods for 60 years, I'm a happy old guy!

  18. I agree. A person that shows some kind of interest needs to be encouraged. They will follow the path that is right for them, in the end they will likely be doing what pleases them, not what pleases someone else. With the right encouragement though they can be led out of the darkness and into the light. ;)

I always tell the young guys...

You can call them all hot rods if you want to. And they're all cool.

Then I show them a picture of a traditional flat-head powered roadster.
    And tell them...

But this is the type of car that was originally called a hot rod.

My little 10 year old buddy Zander understands that the really old hot rods are... in his words... handmade.

    I confess....... I'm 52 in March. [shhhhhhhhhh!]
I have never even tried cigarettes or alcohol ,and do Weight training x 3 [weekly], Aerobics x 3 [weekly] trying to reverse the perils of time.

I was once told, if you want a lifetime of sitting on the edge of the cliff staring down into the abyss of broken relationships, poverty, sleepless nights, no career future blah blah! ,then marry a [Race] Car guy.

    It's been fun though!

When I die, I'd like to go in my sleep... like Grandpa did.

... not screaming in terror like the four other people in his car.

Im 39 and this thread really makes me think and wonder what will this "hobby" will look like in 20 years. I will be 59 by then. Will parts and cars be cheaper? Will it even be legal to drive our gas powered cars on the street? Judging from the pole, it looks like the majoraty of hambers are older gentlemen, thanks for keeping this thing going. I have learned so much here on the hamb thanks to the older guys. It truly is apreciated

I've spent pretty much my whole life looking forward to old age ... at 74 (soon) it's just as good as I hoped! :)

Blame it on my Grandfather, the guy was 65 when I was born and fast became my best buddy, he let me "help" (really?) when he built (at 75) his last "for sale" house, he let me hang around the lake cabin "we" built (he was 81 then) and listen to the stories he and his old crony friends made up about their youth and such.

Oh yeah, on the many trips to build that lake cabin he taught me to drive. There were no slow drives down the back roads or side streets but I heard a lot of "Go, go boy ... GO!" He sort of believed that if the car would go 85 you were supposed to drive it 85.

He had all the usual aches and pains of an old man in the 1940s, 50s and 60s but he was too busy living to let them get to him.

Enough rambling about the glories of old age ...

Will be 73 in couple of days. Started this stuff with a '29 Model A in 1958. Not ready to quit just yet.

  27. Good gravy! My youngest is older than you.
