looks like a very nice car but how is it a custom? I see a 100% stock body with every bit of factory ornamentation on it. Looks like a stocker that is lowered with a rolled and pleated interior

To start, I appreciate the compliment. It is a super nice car. You are correct about the body being stock, but the car overall is not stock. It has some subtle custom treatments. It's been lowered. It has custom upholstery. It has a detailed (and hopped up engine). It has non-stock paint. So, to my way of thinkin', it's not really a hot rod by most old-school standards and it's not a stocker. I guess if you use the 1970's standard, it would be considered a "Street Machine", but I don't like that terminology, just like I don't really like the 1970s. ;) That would leave some type of subtle custom.

I'll admit that it barely meets the criteria, but I nevertheless thought some of the guys and gals on this thread might enjoy seeing this car and what it does have to offer the viewer. Again, I appreciate the compliment and I also appreciate your well informed assessment. However, can we agree that it's at least a VERY mild custom?:)

Gibbs car is close to mild custom where I grew up, wheel/tire , lowered. But to fit the style then it would need nosed and decked. NHRA punished me while racing, so I really don’t want to defend the post. But even though Barris, Watson, Hines, Conway, Jackson, and a few others were close by. Most driving around were closer to his.

Believe me, Roger, I'm personally no big fan of the (modern) NHRA either, although I do take part in some of the "Heritage" Nostalgia meets. Although he doesn't talk about it (he's not the kind of guy who would ever say anything bad about anyone), I don't think the NHRA's treatment of Steve in the end was all that great, but I shouldn't get off on that topic. ;)

All of that aside, I really appreciate your comments. Thanks!

This is the era I enjoyed the most. You hit a home run there my friend. A guy could do this at home starting with a $75.oo car. All of his Pals thought it was way Kool. When my Brother and I built my 51 the basic rule was do it like we used to when the driveway was where we did it all. Just clean and Fun. I don't call mine a Custom either, just cleaned up. It does have all White T&R inside. Never again for a driver.

I love this Chevy! The design is completely outside the box!

Story has it that restoration was a PITA. For instance, as originally built, the custom side molding was said to be just riveted to the car without being welded, and merely Bondo'd in. (That doesn't make me like it any less.)

I do miss the original grille.

Some shots that I have not seen before.
Or don't remember seeing them before.
The latter probably being more accurate. 15776152786347906246631721633654.jpeg 15776152997124247391555753889071.jpeg 15776153792776861492293424263759.jpeg

Incidentally, this is a Buick, not a Caddy. It was posted quite a while back in this very thread with photos by our friend Mick of @straykatkustoms.
The car is/was owned by Doug Hall and is a masterpiece of rolling custom modifications. The topper to everything that was done to the car is the fact that it was striped by both Ed "Big Daddy" Roth AND Larry Watson the same day at a Rat Fink Reunion or Hot Rod's of Norco Open House in the 90s sometime. Talk about history! Man whatta ride..........E
