Been searching for months to trade my 1934 Ford (Henry Ford STEEL) 3 window coupe for a 1950-1951 Mercury Chopped Lead Sled. I see pictures all over the place but not many for sale or trade. Have been looking at all the normal sites on the internet (Classic Cars For Sale, Classic AutoTrader, Hemmings, etc.) with not much luck.

Where are all those Merc. sleds? Don't see many at car shows like I used to. Seems like everyone is holding on to them even though they are not as popular as they used to be. Any suggestions or any out there for trade/sale?

over past couple of months there were a couple of super deals here in Northern Cal on craigslist - both of them said no trades - like anything, gotta be in the right place at the right time -

  3. The fact you can't seem to find them For Sale might contradict your thoughts that they aren't as popular as they used to be, along with the fact your shopping for one. Find yourself a Good Guys Gazzett and look in the back of it. They show up there quite often.

Nice looking 34 by the way

I'm thinking that a lot of the guys who put a custom Merc up for sale are doing so as they are financing another custom that is to the point where it needs real money spent on it.

Hi, What kind of value do you place on your coupe ? Give me a summary of the car, running gear, rear end ratio, air, p/s, brakes, etc.etc What does it need? Is it a daily driver type of car? I've owned my Merc for 40 years and Serious Health Issues for my wife and I have left the car virtually Parked and unused in the garage for the past 6 years. If I get rid of my car I do not want to see it in Albuq, don't want my sons and grandchildrento see it around either.. This is a 49, not 50/51.

Does Gateway Classic`s (?) in St Louis Mo have 4 or 5 locations that take cars in on consignments. Maybe you could do a trade with them.

Gateway does not trade. Have another car at one of their locations right now.

Your gonna have to expanding your search radius. Craigslist, I've seen a few in the Midwest. But for trade, IDK. "Not as popular" how dare you? ;) Trading your car may not move things along any faster either, especially if it's private party vs a dealer. There's not a lot of Lead Sled Mercs out there for sale, let alone that will except trades (for sure where I live). Motoexotic in St. Louis gets a fair share of Mercs, Gateway Classics, etc. You might have to take a road trip. I thought I was lucky enough to find mine 3 hrs from my house.

That'd be my dream car. The 49 in my opinion is the best looking out of the 49 to 51 mercs, sadly they are all way out of my price range. But a man can dream though.

  25. Swaps are usually hard to put together. Each side assumes that either their car is worth more than the other side, or they assume that there is something wrong with the other car. You would be miles ahead if you just sold your car and then took the cash and went Merc shopping. Cash gives you much more bargaining power, instead of trying to put together a deal where everybody agrees that both cars are identical in value.

  26. Maybe your Hotrod doesn't appeal to the common Merc owner, hahaha. Just kidding. I wouldn't trade my Merc for any Hotrod. I'd rather have both....Used to get trade offers everytime i drove it. The nicer your car is, the harder it is to find anything comperable to trade for.

They're out there. I see them on craigslist and e bay quite often. It's probably easier to purchase one than to trade. Some guys are only into hot rods and some only into customs. Mine is still hibernating.
