Today I got the rear frame section squared and tack welded in place. After tack welding the front engine mounts in, I have a 327 block, along with a Mcleod scattershield dug out and plan to install the engine/trans combo tomorrow. IMG_3716.JPG IMG_3717.JPG IMG_3719.JPG IMG_3721.JPG

  5. The thing is Marty, the wood in the bed rails sits on the frame rails. What happens at the kick up?

    Marty,
That's a TruTrac style. Could have been made by a variety of manufacturers. Are there any markings anywhere on it?

A Torsen Gleason looks like this:

  9. My gosh!! Came here linked by my friend @elgringo71... I'm suscribed! Thanks for sharing this build thread... We always talked with him about all the talented guys over The Hamb. Wish I had some speed/performance drag parts down here in Argentina!!! Don't cry for me Argentina

Going further with the rear axle theme... I read.. back in the day 1 1/2 ton truck would be useful to build a drag banjo.

I think it’s a 3/4 ton unit, that was used.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this Pickup come together. It’s obvious that you have been collecting parts for a while and the build style is my favorite. I always liked Don Lowe’s Pickup. It’s a perfect combination of show and go.

    Dean,
From the bottom of the wood floor, to the bottom of the wood that sits on the frame rails, the measurement is 4-1/2". That should allow 1/2" gap over the top of the rail extensions. I hope I am not missing something. IMG_3728.JPG IMG_3734.JPG

    Today,
I was able to couple up the engine block to the transmission, and add a few goodies for inspiration. The last time I shifted that 4-speed was in the white Boss 302 powered roadster shown, 1975 ! IMG_3726.JPG IMG_3730.JPG IMG_3733.JPG 2012-08-22 110155.jpg

  17. If you measured it, I'm sure the bed wood will be fine Marty.

Love those Hilborns on an RPU!!

Bowie is correct, the basis for Championship quickchange rears evolved from the 3/4 ton Timken truck axle that was used in 1939 and up Fords and Studebakers. The wide 5 hubs (Shown) were 39-41 Ford as near as I know. P1010156.JPG

Dean, your injector stacks look like 6", mine are 10", I will be looking for some 6's or 8's. Do you have any closeup shots showing the pocket in your firewall to clear the mag ?

  20. Thanks for the education Marty... The wide five wheels were 18" tall in trucks?

Really like how you're getting started but I've got a question. Looking at the pic of the rear ends hanging on the wall, how are the spring perches attached? I can't get in close enough to see it. Are they welded directly to the axle tubes?

I see it often on Instagram so I’m sure the current owner would be easy enough to get ahold of if you really wanted a good look. I’d snoop further but I’m off IG and Facebook for a while. Hope the videos are helpful

    Alan,
The housings are '37-'40 with the stock spring hanger in place. I wanted to retain the spring stretch of v-8 rear axle. The width of a v-8 banjo is 3-3/4" vs 4-3/8" for the Championship, and the thickness of the side plate adapters is 1-1/4. My old friend Lonnie Gilbertson narrowed each housing 1-9/16" to compensate for the width, and pruned off the bearing snouts to fit the bolt on floater spindles. Thanks for your interest. Bruce, The only markings I found were engraved on the center barrel, LG333R, I know the L &R designate right and left. Is a TruTrac similar to a Dan Press Gold Trac ? BTW, did you notice you and Swade41 share the same Avatar, hard to miss ! IMG_3739.JPG
