Too wide for a Model A? Have a line on one thought it would work for my build.

I'd grab it. IIRC, that's what was used BITD. It's just about a perfect fit.

Tri-five rears are 60 inches axle flange to flange if that helps. A lot of tri-five four doors and wagons got parted out to build an early hot rod.

  10. I have a 57 in mine. Same width as 55.

  11. Good selection of ratios. The lowest ratios came in 6 cylinder 3 speed cars. Can't remember if Chevy offered an overdrive option that year, but overdrive cars were geared low generally.

  12. My '55 with 265 and O.D. had 4.11's.

May not really matter but the ‘55 and maybe the ‘56 use smaller axle bearings than the later ones. I have a ‘64 3.36 in my coupe.

    My 55 with a 265 and O.D. was a 411. Tough mother.

  15. 3.08 was the lowest factory gear in 55-57 IIRC.

This one has 3.36 gears in it. So far it's gonna have a '58 283/350 and possibly this rearend.

  19. There are too many acronyms on the HAMB lately. I am getting older and can't keep up.
Pretty soon there will be a post with nothing but random letters on it!

I'm with you. No wonder people can't spell or use a period.

Yes, 55s and 56s have smaller axle bearings than does the 57. The real plus, in my opinion, is that the 57 has a differential drain plug while the 55 and 56 do not.

GM must have had a change of heart at some point, my ‘64 housing has no drain plug.

  24. Hey Scott. Does the 58 block have provision for a late-style bolt up starter?

    What year?

  28. The 66-77 Bronco 9 inch is a good rear at 58 inches wide and it's 5x5.5 bolt pattern, I have that rear in 3 different vehicles.

I thought it was a "one off".. Had the pumpkin up to 64 but something was different on the ends as I remember. I always looked to 56-7 when shopping.
