Ha ha...you sucker! You got bit by the bug. Now all your free time and money will be spoken for from here on out! Sorry, but there is no cure. That looks like it will make a nice truck. All it needs is time, work and money.
Cool truck, - or would that be cool pick up ? Either way, anyone who has 26 posts on his first day with the courtesy you have shown so far, will not only give HRP a run on his post count, but will learn a lot here ! Welcome to the HAMB......
Dont mount that engine on the engine stand by the bellhousing.... no matter what you see in hot rod magazine.... Looks to be a solid starting point for a cool build Congrats. Chappy
Thank you all for the time you've taken to read and reply I've decided to continue with pulling and hopefully rebuilding the flathead. Tucson happens to have a "Bonefied" flathead specialist (Coyoteflathead) and I'll reach out to Wayne tomorrow.
Thanks again to all of you I'm even mor pump to move forward just to hear your input. Now back to the fun, are we allowed to show photos like this
I read a thread somewhere that there were some dealerships in this F1's past that would install hood ornaments on near anything. Can any of you help me understand why this is on the hood.
I am guessing that the owner dressed it up himself a little, or the dealer may have done it at the owner's request, or perhaps to give it a little pizzazz in the showroom. That is a nice looking project, I'll go back to lurking.
I came here to say EXACTLY what missysdad said but theres no point in me repeating him, so just read his post again. The SBC is the universal cure for the crappy underpowered EXPENSIVE flathead
Lots of good info has been given. One thing that I haven't heard mentioned is something I always do first when I get a non-functioning project. I make it stop and steer safely before I make it go. That used to drive my kids crazy when they were younger. They always wanted a big horsepower motor first. I can understand their desires, but having been dumb and done that, I learned real quick, how iffy brakes and worn steering and suspension components mixed with a great motor can be hazardous to your health. I am sure you aren't as impatient as I was or my kids were, but after over 50 years of doing this stuff , the stop, steer, and then go procedure ha worked for me, my once impatient kids, and a lot of others. And most of all have a plan in place! You can modify it as needed, but a solid plan makes life so much easier and satisfying. Otherwise your project dan be as refreshing as trying to push a rope. Welcome aboard and good luck!
Hello all Had a great talk with flathead specialist here in Tucson and once I pull this I'll flip it up side down and if all is good rip it apart and take it to the Flathead Doc. For a checkup.
PB post shower , I started with PB then screw driver and wire brush scrub followed by a pressure washer battle and finished with the PB shower you see
That looks close to the shape my 48 was in when I got . The flat head was complete . I yanked it out pulled the intake hosed it down , and in two days it was spinning free and easy . The Flathead went into my Bud’s A Bone truck and is still running today . He put Aluminum heads on it and a 2 Deuce intake . While apart we noticed it was punched .010 over . I installed a 302 , C4 and a nine inch from a 76 F100 . The rear was a direct bolt in . Steering I used Toyota Power Box , I know it’s not HAMB friendly , but it worked great for 70K miles that I owned the truck . PM me if you want to discuss the Toyota steering . Good Luck and above all build it safe .
Thank you so much for that awesome information you've almost described what I plan on doing . And I haven't yet learned how
Sweet truck ! I was hoping you would power wash it sooner than later Take lot's of pictures while you doing this, I take over a 1,000 while fabricating a Hot Rod. Welcome to the HAMB ! Allot of us have been here for a very, very, very, very ... long time Glenn
Thanks HotRod I don't know that this truck will be worth 1000 pictures but I'll keep anybody who's watching in the loop
It is possible, yes. Tail lamps on both side were not federally mandated until sometime in the '50's, and mandatory turn signals came along not too long afterward.
Thanks for the input Murcury66. This truck seems to leave me with al sort of questions. Like how can I find out what color this truck was? Did the dealership sell it with just one tail light? Why is it that my vin does not seem to work with any coders I've seen? Did the dealership put the hood ornament on the truck? If anyone can help me answer these questions I would be grateful
Don't tear it apart....oops past that.....go ahead and cut the balls off and clip it all Chevy......oh welcome.......
Nice project, Loos lie the truck was Blue like in fire wall, door jams, doors where it was covered with door panels. By removing the hood piece on side will give one a idea too. Good luck.
