Have you ever bought something and then say “Why did I buy that?”? I did that today! lol Saw this old Carter Carb tool kit (?) for sale in St. Louis and had to have it. I didn’t even realize Carter was a St. Louis company!
Found this rolled up and pushed to the bottom of one of the holes. Had to sort out all the tools and see what was there....... It’s kinda cool to think about the stories this tool kit could tell. It also pushed me to do a little research on Carter Carbs. Interesting story, and interesting the fact the factory site was deemed an EPA “Superfund” site due to contamination. The 480,000 square foot factory was supposedly demolished in 2017.
If you wish to learn more about the Carter tools, and also a general function for the ones you have, this link may help: http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Carter_tools.htm The Carter tool set evolved over the years. The box you have was used from 1939 through 1951. Jon.
Well there's another something I didn't know I needed until this morning! Atleast I have a few Carter W1's to rebuild as an excuse
Were Carter carburetors used on military vehicles - jeeps, deuces, etc? If so I bet they cranked out a gazillion of those. Military contracts were "cost + 15%" or somesuch. Wouldn't surprise me if they weren't still upholding their end of the bargain in 1947 and beyond. It's the Patriotic thing to do.
@Al T ... are you referring to the long slot ? Do you have the throttle gauge ? It's a thin flat metal plate ... that is used to measure the degrees of throttle engagement. Maybe that fits in the slot ?
See the pictures in my post earlier in the thread. Pump stroke gauges T109-45, 46, 47, and 48 slipped into the slot. All four were discontinued and superseded by T109-117s. The throttle indicator gauge T109-155s (used on Buick and Packard carbs to adjust the starter switch) has its own metal box. Jon.
Al, yes the factory was indeed demolished. I work about 3 miles east on I-70 from where the old factory was. I remember the demolition going on. Where in St. Louis did you find that neat old kit? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Now you need a vintage Carter carburetor to practice on with all those tools and gauges! Yes....shameless self promotion. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/carter-bbr-1-carb.1175852/ Lynn
