This man that owns Halls in Wichita comes to my barbershop for haircuts. It’s still in business.

^^^ I saw a YENKO shop truck sell at BJ a few years back, the crate in the back said 427 on it and had the YENKO Chev dealers shipping address. Looks like the same idea as above.

    Hello,

We lived near Joe Mailliard’s Speed Shop on Cota Ave, just one block behind the main Westside of Long Beach street called Santa Fe Ave. It was a great place to see the drag racing cars on trailers and ones being built. We saw the 1948-49 Ford pick up truck parked at the shop every time we went there to get our weekly Drag News Paper. At the time, we thought it was just a custom pickup truck going to the speed shop at the same time as we did. But, little did we know that the 48-49 truck was the shop truck for all errands and the specific push truck for the Sidewinder.

When we were at Lions in 1958-59, one could not help but notice that sleek Sidewinder race car sitting in front or on the side of the dark green Ford truck. So, it did double duty as a speed shop truck and the tow/push truck for the original 1959 Sidewinder.

It was one of our favorite race cars and we saw it in person at the shop and at Lions Dragstrip. The fire up in the pits was always a favorite with most people as the sound was pretty fantastic. It always drew a crowd, including my brother and me.

    upload_2019-11-23_4-34-4.png 1958-59

But, the main draw was watching the Sidewinder roll down the dragstrip in front of the shop truck, to fire up for the next race. It was also when most people "stood" to watch the race car in action. Watching the Sidewinder fire up was an event and most everyone wanted to see it in action. This was the way most dragsters fired up for the next race or elimination. It was the show before the show.

    VINTAGE TRUCK FROM 1958-59, NOT A RE-CREATION
    SIDEWINDER SOUND

The films were taken by me in the Spring/Summer of 1959. The sound was recorded in September 1959 at the Detroit, U.S. Nationals. It was on an old LP album my brother and I had purchased in late 1959 in So Cal. Now "digital sounds" from the fall of 1959 add to the feeling that most got, when they saw the Sidewinder in action in my films from the Spring and Summer of 1959.

PUMP UP THE VOLUME !!! Get the feeling of being at Lions Dragstrip in 1959.

    Hello,
As far as being a cool, neighborhood speed shop is/was, this location was within a short bicycle ride to get our hot rod/drag race information and weekly Drag News paper. I just found it in our drag racing history files. The Joe Mailliard's Automotive Engineering shop was located on Cota Ave. in Long Beach, CA.

Back then, the zip codes were short 1 and 2 digit numbers. The shop was in zone 13 and we were in zone 10, just a couple of blocks away. The phone numbers were words and numbers, then shortened to just the two letters of the whole word. (Hemlock down to HE.) Within several years prior to the HEmlock prefix, our phone number was GA for Garfield 60457. But, was changed as that section of the neighborhood outgrew the listings.

Everyone wanted a "private line" over a "party line", creating a change/addition in phone number lines. There was no privacy in a "party line" as anyone could pick up the phone and listen to your conversation. The "party line" was standard and a lot less in monthly costs.

Then as the phone listings and usage grew, the newer area codes were put into play. First it was 213, then 310, then finally 562. Each time the original number was in an area of rapid expansion and usage. The hot rods, drag racing and cruisers also changed with the times. As did the young kids that grew up as hot rod/drag race guys and moved out of the area after the teenage years.

That green Ford shop truck fit right into the neighborhood and at the drags. upload_2019-11-26_5-53-29.png

Not exactly a hotrod or customs shop....but still a vintage photo of a real shop truck.

Jerry Unser's 56 shop truck taken at The Henry Ford Museum.

Oh btw, the parquet floor in the museum cost $20 mil in 1929.
