The Japanese definitely "get" the custom and hot rod culture.

I don't know...it just doesn't make sense to me that they would embrace late 40s, early 50s American car culture, considering that during those years, they were rebuilding their country's considerable damage...caused by the Americans. It just seems odd.

  18. It always amazes me just how many great cars are over there!...Thanks for posting.

  19. .............I get what you are saying for sure. Not quite the same, but we tend to romanticize the Hot Rod scene in the 30's when the country was struggling to recover from the depths of the Depression.

Considerable damage done by Americans was caused by Japanese. Ron

  21. I think that the average age of hot rodders in Japan may be a tad younger than those of us here in the U.S.A. Not certain about that. Many of them weren't around in the 40' and 50's just like most of us weren't around in the 30's. It's easy to look at the images online and in magazines and think that these were the "best" of times when like you said, Jack, they obviously were not.

The two things are unrelated and they don't make this connection. These folks weren't around during WWII and they love icons of American culture. Japanese society is primarily about fitting in, and people who don't like fitting in see this as a way to stand out. My point was that when they decide to do something, they really dig in and do it right.

Hey Don & Ron, I was just musing...sort of thinking out loud.

I'd say that part of their car culture is associated with being a rebel. Here in the PNW we get a lot of tourists from Japan and while the older folks usually fit the stereotype of the staid Japanese citizen a lot of the younger ones are quick to pick up on what they see as cool American stuff.
