  2. I'm an old goat so there have been waaaaayyyyy many nifty dashes that have appealed over the years, but the first that really knocked me out was in '61 (the car in question would be around 25 at the time).

I was riding my bike down Sherman Way in Canoga Park. Parked at the curb in front of Sturtevant's Auto Parts was the most striking, gorgeous, black car with a white top...……..I'd never seen anything like it, hidden headlights and all. When I stuck my head in the open side window to see the interior and particularly the dash I was absolutely floored...…... cord dash.jpg

Our old Cord was impressive, it reminded me of the Spirit of St. Louis. I've like turned dashes (or anything, for that matter) ever since I was a little kid. 4c49b65b16be6553adefe9a5db22769e.jpg

Around 1960 my brother Tom purchased a wrecked 57 Stude Golden Hawk in the So Cal desert.
He put everything, 289, blower, big brakes, rear end, and the beautiful Hawk dash into his 53
Champion coupe. That car really made an impression on me at 13 years old. 53 Stude #1.jpg Screenshot_2019-11-28 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk for sale #2213226 - Hemmings Motor News.jpg

  9. There are so many that I love, like the 57 T-Bird, the 39 Ford DeLuxe, most of the 1930s Chrysler products, even the OT 69 Mustang Mach 1, and like mentioned above, the 55-56 Chevy because of its symmetry, here is mine:

Wow, very cool Stude. My cousin had a golden hawk in the early 60's, but I like the 53 better.

Pontiac up through the 1960s used an Indian head logo for the high beam indicator. I've always liked that detail.

Mother N.'s real tree wood grain can add a lot to flow of design, note moms nott hole was the best place for speed-O hole to match all. The grain detail flows with the flamed design,my son Lance hunted for that wood to fit the designed for over a month an,before finding this board to cut out. This bucket was a father & son build, not a kit. Lance named it "Pandora"[IMG]

  16. The first old car dash that really made an impact on me was obviously the dash in our '32 Ford 5wd Coupe:

... but the old car dash that really "stands out in my mind" is the dash in our Jet Black '57 Chrysler 300 Coupe (now owned by @johnl):

  17. I have a statement that I make when people ask about choices and building a car: the steering wheel, dash and top of the hood are what you look at the most. Don't screw them up! :)

This is my old 64 Bonneville with a Hurst Autostick I shifter and my old 64 Grand Prix with a 421 and a Slim Jim Hydro. It also had AM/FM with reverb.. The Daddio of the Raddio sounds real cool with the reverb...

Dashboards can be so cool. Especially at night.

When I was a kid, my dad's 1957 Plymouth sat in the garage for a long time and I sit in there and admire the dashboard. I remember snub-nosed bullet-shaped chrome knobs.

But the dashboard that really sticks out in my mind from when I was a kid in the early to mid 1960s...
    Jimmy Jet.
Not a car, but it did a lot to make me want to get behind the wheel of something with a lot of chrome and fancy knobs and stuff.

I like the stock dash in my 47 Ford coupe, but these 41 Ford dashes look pretty slick too

    Hello,

The two that stand out in my memory are the 58 Impala black paint with red interior and dash. The other one was the simple 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery, it was completely stock, but nice. Both were used daily for high school transportation and or to various jobs throughout its lifetime. They both created a bond with me as I looked at them with joy and wonderment. From the nervousness of the starting line at Lions Dragstrip to the simplicity of the 40 Ford dash doing just simple things like lights on at night. They both stared back at me constantly.

The Impala was the dress up, factory hot rod that had shown everyone its taillights on Cherry Avenue over the years of ownership. But the view out of the front windshield at night was the responsibility of the lights on the dash and small tachometer, showing the critical stuff. The red dash paint was glistening and the nervousness made everything blank for a few, 14 second runs. It is too bad there weren’t Go Pro cameras facing us inside of the car, with the dash lights lighting up our concentration looks on our faces.

At first, the stock black shift lever end got a daily workout. It was replaced by a custom made, white ball that saw more shifting action until the C&O stick hydro was installed. The Impala dash had the simple aluminum plate where the PNDLR letters should have been if it was a stock automatic. But starting as a stick shift car, the plate was aluminum. That did confuse people who sat behind the steering wheel and saw the chrome stick lever with the white ball, but no clutch pedal.

The 40 Ford Sedan Delivery dash was different in comparison. It was 18 years older and had the simple look with the minimal functions staring back at me. There was no radio as we used to hang our little Sony portable AM radio from the dash for a version of early rock and roll. The stock steering wheel was replaced with a used, flat metal spoked, black, hot rod steering wheel. The LaSalle floor shift lever was as high as the middle of the dash. So the view was simple, but stock everything as no modifications were necessary. It was a get in and drive type of car.

Both cars served their respective purposes and cruised thousands of miles of So Cal scenery, as well as up and down the coastline. As teenagers, it was just nice to have a car or hot rod to go places. Isn’t that the freedom that we all wanted and were able to have once we got our own cars? These were the two of mine that were sold to fund my future. The 2nd 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery, years later, was sold to supplement our growing family’s future.

  28. Here’s the dashboard for the Modified. The panel isn’t a Haneline, it was cast up for me by Karma Kustoms over here - I gave them the Haneline and they gave me the cast version. It’s all a bit busy by California hot rod standards but I have controls for the screen wash, heater, motorised vent flap, fog lamp and fuel pump with associated warning lights. Plus, it’s built here in the UK and that’s what it needs. Everything is straight by the way, just looks off in the photo. IMG_20191206_212946213.jpeg
