Projects Install E-Brake in a '32 ford

Could I see some photos of installing an emergency system in a '32 chassis. I have a flathead/'39 trans. and stock K member. Thanks

This may offer a few tips, photos are of Bud Bryan’s R&C Project ‘29. Not the best, it was the first thing that came to mind. Last photo is posted only to show rubber boot.
BTW, the ‘32 trans cover was the only one the brake handle directly bolted to. Looks like Bud’s bracket is home brewed.

 

Same here. 32 frame with original K-member and 39 tranny. I made this bracket to mount the E- brake lever. The bracket is mounted using a couple of the tranny top bolts.

My brake handle is different at the bottom. I have 3 handles and none of the have the mounting bracket at the base like yours. Looks like it is made to bolt to the K member. Looks like the tricky part is the routing back to the driveshaft.

 

Is the tubing and cable available for purchase for later model cars?

Here’s a 32 tranny top. As you can see, it had mounting holes for the lever.

 

All it is is a solid Clevis rod about a foot long that goes through the slot in your trans mount and then hooks to the brake cable , the old magazine pictures above spear to be more complicated than needed you need a model a style ratchet for your brake leaver available repop for 12$ or so

I installed a 40 hand brake many years ago. More room for the passenger and much easier to use.

 

How about a picture of your brake handle.

 

Here’s what the above handle looks like. Squeezing it releases the ratchet and the cable is “armored “, it’s in a sheath that guides it without the need for pulleys.

 

32 bolts to the stock trans top, 33-34 mounts to the x member, 35-36 to the transmission mount. Whichever one you choose to adapt, the hydraulic brakes like a little more throw than the early handles provide. You can use the stock 32 brake pivot hub or make a similar functioning pivot lever to get a little more throw to the brakes.

 

Yes, when I installed my stock 32 arm on a 39 trans with my own bracket, it didn't have enough pull distance to fully operate the 40 parking brakes. I built an idler arm that pivots off the right side of the back of the K member. A solid rod runs from the bottom of the parking arm through the slot in the rear trans mount, to the idler. I used some old Ford clevises to make it adjustable. Then I used another short rod from the idler to the U clamp on the stock 40-style brake cable. Sorry I don't have any ratio info for the idler, my smarty-pants little brother figured it for me.

 

Around 3:1 seems to work well.

 

I trimmed a piece of angle iron and used two of the top 39 transmission bolts to hold it in place and then bolts and washers to mount the E-handle on the side. I hold the front of the actuating cable with a hole in my battery bracket. I used a 40 rear cable trimmed and bound with clamps using a Nico wrench. there are two lengths for a 40 cable, 122" for passenger and 107.5 for a pickup. I think I started with the longer but would check the shorter the next time.

For the front cable< I shortened one by cutting one end off, drilled it out and then silver soldered the cut length in, resulting in 39.5" long cable.

Mine is a little different, My old Deuce has a automatic transmission and I used a aftermarket E-brake, I looked at the tall original style but since leg room is limited I opted to use the low mount E-brake to allow the passenger, ie Brenda room to move around. HRP

 

Gene at MEC out of Ohio also sells a nice setup, using a 32 style e-brake with a 39 box.

With this later style hand brake lever does the firewall and dash need reinforcement?

At the least I'd think the mounting ends of the brake handle would need some modification, correct?

Anyone have any details on this type of installation?

I think a 40 firewall is about as strong as a 32, but a 40 dash is probably way stronger than a 32. Definitely strengthen the dash mount end.
